St. Croix, US Virgin Islands

The first tourist to arrive to St. Croix didn't get much of a warm welcome. Landing on its shores in 1493, Christopher Columbus was quickly driven away by the spears and arrows of the Carib Indians. The welcome is much warmer these days. Often overlooked in favor of its more hopping island neighbors, St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is worth a side trip for some of the nicest sand beaches in the Caribbean.

Check out Sandy Point Beach, at the southwest tip of the island, famous for its soft white sand and shallow waters that reach only waist-high a hundred yards into the ocean. It also happens to be a turtle nesting ground. Don't turtles always know the best beaches? Stroll the streets of Christiansted and Frederiksted in St. Croix, founded by the Danes, and check out Fort Frederik, built to protect Frederiksted from pirate raids. Stop by Mt. Pellier Hut Domino Club to see Hurricane Roger, the incredible beer-drinking pig, guzzle a can of beer in 30 seconds.
