Today I signed up for health insurance!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with RE/MAX Elite

Well after a year and a half without having health insurance, I decided to sign up with Blue Cross Blue Shield today. I was pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive it was and am wondering if maybe there are some other REALTORS that have not looked into the possibility of having health insurance because they were afraid of the costs. I am not here to sell anyone insurance but if you haven't looked into it because of the fear of the cost, I would recommend you make a couple of phone calls to your local health insurance providers.

This business is stressful enough and not having health insurance just adds to our daily worries.

I am glad you posted about this.  My husband was just telling me what he spends on health insurance at his work.  For him, it would be free, but, just adding me, makes it over $400 a month.  My children are covered under their father, so, I think I will check around.  I would like to keep Blue Cross/Blue Shield...they seem to cover more in my area.  Thanks again.

Good for you!  I bet you feel much better having that protection!  Exit Realty actually has a great plan for all Exit associates.  Dental and vision included......when you are self employed it is hard to get coverage that is good at an affordable cost.....congrats.

Hi Manny~ I have not had to worry about health insurance since my husband's job lets us pay for me to be covered.  But, I bet there are a lot of Agents not covered.  You are right, there are enough things to worry about and that can go wrong, insurance is something you can't do without!

I wrote a blog long ago about how hard it is to get quality health coverage for an agent if you have to health qualify . You must be young healthy and non smoking .. what is the pre existing clause.

Thanks to everyone for the comments....Eric, There was no clause for pre existing conditions..I am young and healthy so that is not an issue, but I also run my business as an LLC therefore I was able to sign up as a group account which does not require medical underwriting.

I'm from Canada and there is a bit of myth about health care being entirely free up here. Basic stuff is covered (by our higher taxes, of course) but I still have a policy costing me about $400 a month to cover 80% of drugs, dental work, and a bit of life insurance.

It's a different system, that's all. There is no free lunch and we do pay for everything one way or another. On the other hand, I like the fact that those people in our society who couldn't afford to pay for the basics are covered with reasonable service. It will be interesting to see how this issue plays out in the US over the next couple of years.

In the meantime, congratulations on getting your health coverage. sounds ike a great move.

I was able to extend my active duty military coverage for a relatively low amount per month, and just did so yesterday. As long as I stay a drilling reservist, I can maintain my healthcare benefits for my family. It definitely is nice to have that extra blanket of security. My wife and I have both been self employed before, and not having coverage can dig a hole quickly. Good move on your part, and it was a good idea to promote it to others.

Since I had Renal Cell Cancer in 2001, I am not eligible for 10 years for any insurance...Hello 2011...it's really sad.  I'm a single woman, so no husband to cover me.  I pay for everything up front.

So sad.

good post.

Back when I was single, I had looked into BCBS for insurance, but they said they didn't have any policies for "Self Employeed" people because any injury could be considered "on the job".  Maybe that's Texas specific, or maybe they've changed their policies since 2000-2001.

Thanks for the heads up I have thought about looking into switching because of getting ready to retire. I have always depended on my wifes company for insurance.

Congrats!

My wife (you carried our insurance) was downsized in January. May is the first month it has been on our own. $800 a month for a healthy family would make a nice car payment

I have had BCBS for about 5years and had the A Plan until it was going to cost me $800.00 a month.  I have reduced my premium and went on the B Plan and its well over $500 and now I am considering getting a even higher deductable.  With my husband not building houses and hardly any Home Inspections and me not selling too many home or land its just getting to where I may have to cancel it all together or get catastrophic Ins.  I don't know what we will do.  As you get older it gos up and up.  It started out just at $400.00 just 5 years ago and that same one would cost me over double.

Thanks again to everyone who has commented..I agree with most that it is an unfortunate part of this industry that here is no health care standard. You would think that with the amount of dollars that we give NAR, there would be someone there that had the skills to put together an AFFORDABLE NATIONAL health insurance program for the REALTOR members....I (because of my age) have personally lucked out and received an affordable rate but I do know that as I get older the rates will continue to increase..All we can hope is that by then our fearless leaders will somehow get this health care situation taken care of and Self Employed individuals will be able to take advantage of affordable rates without sacrificing coverage.

Manny, you can often get it through your local board of Realtors® as a group, making it slightly more affordable.  But being old enough for Medicare is the best deal of all!

I have foregone insurance for the last 2 years but have recently started looking into getting it.  My wife is a nurse and she could get it through her work but at her job that would mean taking a full-time status and close to $30,000 dollar pay cut!

BC/BS has given us the best rate so far and I am glad to hear that you are pleased with your plan.  Great post!
