Every year, Newsweek posts their best (Top 1200) high schools in America list. Their criteria include number advanced placement students, how many students graduate and how many children take certain tests. The top 1200 are actually the top 5% of public schools.
For the last two years in a row a high school in Tucson, AZ has made the TOP 10!!
BASIS High School, a local charter school, has placed 6th in the entire nation for academic excellence. Charter schools are considered to be public schools as they receive public funding and education is provided free of charge to students. However, they are not part of a school district. Tucson has many good charter schools, but BASIS is the only high school that made Newsweek's Top 1200 list.
BASIS School started in 1998 as a middle school and expanded each year to include a new grade. They are now a fully functioning high school. They have glowing parental reviews, although the curriculum is very challenging and, according to parental reviews, they do admit children to the school based on test scores rather than waiting list positions.
