So, this week we are about incorporating your marketing messages into your social media lifestream so you can see more ROI for your social media efforts.

If you use social media for your business you need to remember to keep your marketing messages in your Twitter, Facebook, Frindfeed, LinkedIn life stream. That said, you gotta make it subtle. You cant constantly tweet “hey visit my site www.retardedwidgets.com” 9 times a day or post a Facebook status reading, I sell the best widgets out there for all your widget needs, call me.” You need to create messages that slip seamlessly into your lifestream and can call people to action and get them to do whatever it is you want them to do.

1. Identify your purpose what do you want to gain from your social media efforts. Do you want to increase traffic for ad impressions? Do you want to directly boost sales? Do you want people to register for a webinar or ebook so you can collect a database? Or do you just want to create some buzz?

2. Identify the path this means you need to consider the actual path a reader would take from your lifestream source to your website, landing pages, registration page, shopping cart.

3. Identify messages that will make them convert from the social site to your site. This is where you think about the call to action. For example, DunkinDonuts and JetBlue offer deals on Twitter and link directly to their deal/coupon pages in tweets. Now, their deals are AMAZING they have to be to get people to follow them. So, remember that if you want to use the “deal” as the message it really needs to be a GREAT DEAL. So, a good one for the widget biz might be “today only, lime green widgets 60% off. With a link to the purchase page for the widgets.” Deep discounts and time limited offers can be really effective in boosting sales immediately.

4. Identify messages that will alert people to what your business and industry is about and show you as a professional. This means sharing a little of your life so for the this booming widget business I put together it might be “hey, on the factory floor and it looks like lime green widgets are HOT HOT HOT this year.” Or you share something from Digg like “Widget company x is under federal investigation in a widget ponzi scheme.” Mix all these messages into your regular content about yourself and your interests and now you have a solid tweet plan. Make sure you use varying rich media formats like video, images and links so you can share most effectively.

5. Track your traffic and your conversion. If your website does not already have landing pages for products or services, create them. www.copyblogger.com has tons of content on effective landing page optimization. And if you do not already have Google Analytics, VisiStat or Mint installed to track your traffic, install one today so you can begin to track your ROI.

These are some very important things to slow down and think about before diving into new media sites. We need to be intentional with our time. Thank you for putting this information together.

You little temptress, you! Love it. You've got these boys frothing, with enough energy to run the track at Churchill Downs 2 or 3 times!

Mary, very good information. I see a lot of agents constantly send "spammy" info out on FB and Twitter like "use me, call me now..." and I find that annoying. Thanks for the post.

And we'll keep tuning in...

Seriously, it is tough to balance the social part with the marketing message.  I'm always looking for ways... and sometimes find one.

I read this post the first time around on my iPhone and didn't see the video. Content heavy. I THINK I remember what you said. I just know Thursdays all of a sudden got more interesting for me ;) You are so fun Mary and have started your own group with Bikini Thursday whether you thought about that or not.

Certainly a great shocking way to market. I don't think I could be as bold(well maybe 15 years ago) But shocking marketing does work!

I already saw this on FB, but I Like the text version just as much - you dont need the bikini when your content is good!

But Robert, wearing the bikini in a business video means i can write off all my new bikini purchases. I have thought this through and since I love expensive bikinis like Ed Hardy and Colleen Kelly, I think it makes the best financial sense.

Wait Mary...  I think he is saying that you have good content, so you could do the videos nude... You don't need the bikini.
