DAVE'S FRIDAY FEATURE
Figured I'd end the week with something fun.
You seen them all over the place. If you text, email, play online games, post on blogs, or do anything using social media, you seen them. They're part of the everyday lexicon of web users. They add to a message what cannot always been perceived from the content itself: emotion.
Many people know some of the basic ones :) but not everyone knows most of the more commonly-used emoticons :(, so here's a quick primer that will help you take another step away from being a n00b ("noob" – a derogatory form of "newbie") towards being a l33t (from "elite", sometimes replaced with "uber" as in something is "uber cool" or "l33t"). For those interested, substituting numbers for letters is an old-fashioned way of making passwords more secure and is "web speak" and used interchangeably.
Here goes...
| :) |
a "smiley" - meaning humor or expressing happiness |
| :D |
grin - a step up from a smiley, also used in place of LOL (Laughing Out Loudly) |
| :)) or :DD |
big grin - a step up from a grin, also used in place of ROFL (Rolling On Floor Laughing) |
| :( |
sad face |
| :(( |
very sad face - a step down (or up) from sad |
| >:) |
evil grin |
| >:( or >:< |
not happy |
| >>:( or >>:< |
mad - worse than not happy |
| :P |
sticking tongue out (usually in jest) |
| :/ or :\ |
skeptical or hmm? |
| :x |
lips are sealed |
| :* |
smooch |
| :# |
just said something stupid (sometimes used for lip are sealed) |
| :'( |
crying |
| :o or :O |
surprise |
| 8) |
cool or smiling with glasses |
| ;) |
wink |
| :| |
not impressed or saying nothing |
You may see variations of the above. There are no hard and fast rules. You'll see people add noses :-) to their emoticons but it all means the same - more or less :)
Now you can text, email and social media knowing a little more about webiquette :D
Happy Friday :P
Hi Dave ~ I pick up the most amazing things on AR! This is great - I've bookmarked it for future reference. Thanks!
