Outdoor Dangers, Things we forget about Part 1

We Northern state dwellers sometimes forget the weather dangers.

One of these issues we forget about is lightning strikes.  Every year we hear of lighting strikes in the Northern states that injure, kill and cause fires in wooded and residential areas.

When severe weather comes it can be fast and unannounced.  After living in the lighting capital of the world...Florida you learn very quickly about the dangers of lightning.

Here is some things that people never think can be a problem.  Your hard wired telephone line is a great conductor of electricity.  That is why surge protectors were suggested for computers that originally were connected to dial up lines and plugged in home wired circuits.  Lightning strikes can turn your electronics into toasted plastic.

This may give you an idea of how important NOAA thinks this topic is they have a web page devoted to the subject and a slogan " When Thunder Roars-Go In Doors!"

Gary, good tips about lightning. I used to live in Gainesville, FL, the lightning capital of the world. They said get off the phone during lightning storms due to the hazard.

Hi Gary~ I was never, ever afraid of lightening.  One day on July 13, 1986 our home and all of our possessions were totally destroyed by lightening at about 6 pm.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  Thanks goodness my husband and I,  nor our four small children were NOT home at the time.  What an eye opening and growing experience that was!

Hi Gary, I am terrified of lightening.  I grew up in a house that sat atop a hill and was the highest point for miles and it wasn't grounded properly.  Every time we had a storm we'd all head for the car to wait it out.  I remember my cat being too close to an outlet and she had her tail singed, my dad had a plate full of lightbulb one morning and lots of other stories that'd make your hair stand on end.  I have a great deal of respect for thunder and lightening and won't even talk on the phone during a storm.
