Everyone—Kilauea Caldera, Big Island, Hawaii

The link above provides basic information about the caldera which is part of the Kilauea volcano located on the Big Island (Hawaii) of Hawaii. If you are ever in the Hawaiian Island chain don't miss this rare "other world" experience. The landscape of the Big Island covers five different climates ranging from arid, desert terrain to rain forest to mountain peaks covered in snow. Visiting Kilauea is unique every time you see it... you never know which personality or mood she will display!

Linda, if it weren't for the steam and the clouds this looks like a photo taken on the moon. I watched a program the other day about the volcanic activity on the Islands. Very interesting.

Hi Jared—Thanks for being the first to comment... you even beat me posting the link for the caldera. Have a great week!

Hi Michael—You're right about the landscape of the caldera being moon-like. The place has an unusal feel to it... eerie to some people, spiritual to others, but inevitably a unique experience for anyone. It's a living laboratory for scientists studying volcanos and an incredible opportunity to learn more about land formation on our planet.

Thanks for stopping by. Have a great week!

Is there any water near by? I am thirsty

Linda - I remember my last visit to the Big Island and you are right about different climates.  You can be wears a heavy coat and 40 minutes later be in a swim suit.  If anyone goes to Hawaii the Big Island is a must see.

Linda, Great picture!  A mixture of the steam and clouds and it is hard to tell the difference between the two.

Linda, love the extreme color contrast and the beautiful blue sky then the ragged terrain.

Hi Katiejo—If your turn 90 degrees from the location of where I was standing to shoot this photo you will see the expanse of the Pacific Ocean, but the only potable water you'll find there is whatever you provide.

Thanks for stopping by. Have a gret week!

Hi Brian—i agree that the Big Island should be on everyone's must do list when visiting Hawaii. However, it's not so easy to take in everything the Islands offer during one trip because each island it unique. Thanks and have a great week!

Hi Amanda—I wanted to visit this place since I was eight years old. I was 54 before I got there, but it was worth the wait! Thanks.

Hi Tony—The steam and clouds do start to blend together. This was a relatively calm day... there are times when the steam and clouds blend together so much when you cannot tell the difference from where the land ends and the sky begins. Thanks you!

Hi Roy—The stark contrasts in Hawaii is one of the reasons it's such a fascinating place... it was a privelege to live there and it remains home in my heart. Thanks for visiting and have a great week!

Hi Kevin—It's interesting about what you say about the terrain looking like another planet. NASA did a lot of planning for our landing and exploration on the moon by experiementing in this area because of the similarity in the terrain. Thanks!

Hey lil' Sistah—Yeppers, I'm still around just busier than a one armed paper hanger. I've hired an assistant to help with my work because I have travel coming up and a few other things I want to do. I posted this photo of Hawaii because my first trip this year will there... can hardly wait! Wish I could take you with me... it would be so much fun to see it through your eyes.

Great to see you... have a great week!

Thanks for sharing, Linda.  I've never been to the volcano but this image sure makes we want to go see it in person.

Linda - Very nice photo. Lots of recent activity has us under a blanket of vog this morning. One of the drawbacks of living near an active volcano :-) - Mike

Linda- You know I couldn't pass the wonderful photo up. I think the white in your photograph is steam & clouds and it's very unusual. I would love some day to go to Hawaii and capture some photographs like this, but until then I will look at your photo!
