Kiln

Child playing piano

Some years ago, I listed a home that had a piano no one wanted. I offered to help the sellers get rid of, not realizing what a big job that would be. I advertised it, made phone calls, and finally found someone who wanted the piano for a child. It was almost as much work as selling the house!

It happened again when I was disbanding my ceramic studio. The same challenge was there – all the equipment remained in my home way way too long... before  a charity contacted me. They had a really wonderful use of the potter's wheel, the kiln, and all the other equipment I had collected over the many years of being an artist. It was going to used by children and that made me feel very proud.

The best part, they came that same day with a truck, loaded everything and took it away. No time to change my mind. It was the right decision.

StairmastrToday I would have a much better way of finding a new home for these items that are still of use but would be costly to have removed. Whether it's furniture, appliances, exercise equipment,  a piano or huge ceramic kiln, I would list it on TRAC under the "Take It Away" heading. And then someone else would come Take It Away.

Truck It's a great way to recycle still-useful items – a green solution for sure.

We can all sing along with George Strait on this one! What items can you think of that would go on a Take It Away list?

Margaret, I think Craigslist has a free section for people who just want it picked up, but it's free otherwise.  If not Craigslist, I know there are other internet sites.  I'm with you on this.  I had to get rid of a piano last week.  Fortunately, another of my buyers wanted the washer/dryer, and I made it a package deal.  He was happy.  So was I. We were able to close escrow with  an empty garage!

Margaret,

Several years ago a friend talked me into signing up to sell "fashion jewelry."  I passed around a few catalogues, eventually picked out what I liked for myself, and put most of it in the huge zipper bag it came in and stowed it in the back of a closet.  Recently we had a "garage sale" event at church and I donated all that (slightly out of style) jewelry.  I was shocked to find that only about a third of it was purchased for $2.00/piece.  The rest... well, you know ... we couldn't give it away!

If only we could reclaim all the money we have wasted on different projects.  I know I would have a healthy savings account!

Margaret, tha's a great idea. I had never heard of TRAC but I'm going to check it out. Here, I usually call the Tennessee Baptist Children's home. They'll come pick up just about anything. If they don't need it then, they put it in their storage. Often when someone looses their house to fire or some other emergency, the local Churches will go looking for things and they look there. Works for everyone!

We have a list of different organizations that take different things...my favorites are the ones who do not charge the recipients...if you really a need a____________you don't need to have someone charge you for it. We had a piano late last year...it was given to the  people who loved the house but couldn't get their credit score up high enough in time to buy it....we are still working on the credit score...nearly there and by summer...the piano and family will have a new home. Feel good about what you give and know that a new home for old things is the best thing.
