Decluttering: Tip #2 – Closets Where Do I Put Everything?

So what if the suitcase doesn’t provide enough room to make a dent in your closets?  (See Tip #1 in a previous post.)  Here are a few other places to stash excess items from your closets.

Take a look around your home to find other items that can do double duty.

        ·    Trunk or other decorative storage pieces that are currently empty or underutilized, i.e. nightstand               drawers, piano bench.  People won’t peek in these, but they will open closets and cupboards.

        ·    Garment bags.  OK, this is an extension of the suitcase, but I thought I’d mention it.

        ·    Wardrobe box from the moving store.  This can easily go in the garage or other storage area and               clear a bedroom closet.  Bonus – you’re ready to move!

        ·   Decorative storage boxes or bins can help make a closet feel more organized.  You can keep things           where they are, just tidy up.

        ·    If all else fails, put things in white kitchen trash bags.  This is especially good for those closets                   filled with miscellaneous items.  It may sound weird, but the white bags will blend into the walls and           won’t feel cluttered.  Just stack them neatly.

Happy organizing!

Great tips, here's one more. How about those big plastic boxes that fit under the bed. You can get four of those under a queen bed.

Love using things that double duty.  Love ottomans and trunks, etc.  Good ideas.

If you have a bed that isn't being used you can layer on extra blankets, sheets etc.  It just makes the bed look nice and full and helps to declutter the linen closet.  I did this when I put my house on the market last month.  I had 3 beds that no one slept in (kids off at college) so I took all my extra throws, blankets, even towels, etc. and layered them on the beds.  I even have some extra flat iron wall art that is being stored between the mattress and boxsprings!

It is amazing how much can fit into nice storage totes and how neat they look when stacked in the garage or in the back of a closet.  People always want more storage and by showing how organized it is, they will perceive it as larger - great tips!

I'm so glad that everyone has added to this list of ideas!  Thanks so much for sharing.  I love the idea of piling things on the bed!

Great tips!  I have also filled decorative pillow shams with sweaters, throws, etc.  If the client has too much "stuff"  it may be time to "cleanse" and donate to charity!
