Meta-tags- keywords or phrases inside a web page's HTML code- can be an important factor in determining your site's placement in a search engine result.

According to author Robert Bly's column in the Direct Marketing News, the crucial meta tags for search engine optimization (SEO) are title, description, and keywords. "These tags control what surfers see when your site is listed in the engines," say Bly, "which means they help people decide whether to visit your site."

  • Title. This is what visitors see at the top of their browser window at your site. Ensure that each of your web pages has a title that makes sense. Your title needs to contain keywords and phrases that people might be typing into a search bar when looking for products like yours. According to Bly, title meta-tags should be 50-70 characters in length, including spaces.
  • Description. The opening statement someone sees when your site appears in a search engine listing. Spend a lot of time getting this one right; it should precisely (and appealingly) describe your products and key services.
  • Keywords. These are the words and phrases people are likely to type into a search engine when looking for products like yours. Bly recommends that you don't cram too many words in here: "Five to seven keywords in the meta-tag is ideal," he says.
