Old Bethel Chapel In Woodbridge VA Going Strong At 160

Bethel Church has been at the same intersection (Smoketown and Minnieville) since it was built in 1850. Originally, it sat across from the Sunoco service station in what would have been the middle of Smoketown Road. In 1977 the Bethel Historical Society had the building moved to its present site on the grounds of Bethel United Methodist Church. The society oversees and maintains the building.

Land for the church was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Burr Glasscock - he was a member of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors. Building materials were gathered by neighbors. The two major Civil War battles at Manassas and the lesser battles in the area had a devestating effect on the area and parishoners. The Glasscock's home was used as a command center and the church served as a hospital - it needed considerable refurbishing at the end of the war. The church now rests in a small pastoral setting and, to this day, is extremely attractive.

Karen - What a picturesque chapel.  I love your maps.  I wish I could figure out how to do something like that for my blog.

Pam  We love to drive by and look at it several times a week.  The maps are not that difficult - my husband wrote a post about them  See Maps
