Recent Life Reflections...by Rebecca D. Levinson- May 2009

I am not a philosopher nor an anthropologist.  I am not a historian nor an ethics gatekeeper but there are a few things that have just really gotten to me over the past few weeks.

Today I am going to share a few.

1. Fear tactics in marketing

The article "Writing PPC Ad Copy That Delivers:  6 Best Practices" in the Spring '09Fear tactics should be so passe by now Issue of Search Marketing Standard the author David Rodnitzky gives some practical advice for writing PPC copy that delivers click thrus.  I was very interested in the content of the article and found it to be insightful, but was then saddened by Rodnitzky's statement in Item 6. of which he lists the basic human emotions that drive PPC ads, "....fear, greed, vanity and exclusivity".

My thoughts:  In a web 2.0 world of online transparency, the old school fear tactics in the advertising world still elicit human response and action that drive purchases online.

2.  Segregation of Community

- Online communities help us to extend our reach beyond the confines of geography and spanning across generational lines.  The ability to make meaningful connections and learn new things is stronger now than before because of technology.  Yet across many social networking venues there seems to be an emphasis on "who you know" even if those you know don't say much that is different from anyone else.

My thoughts:  Having relocated a good 28 plus times in my lifetime, mostly during my childhood, I realize that we are more the same than we are different.  I would welcome a blue collar worker or a high profile attorney to my dinner table any day of the week.  I would react to them based on the content of their character, first, foremost, and always.

Precious are the young minds

3.  Separation of Family Values

- I was looking at my 12 year old daughter Zoe's school papers last week and found a worksheet where she had to fill in the blanks of the different parts of the label of a prescription bottle of pills.  There were also questions on the worksheet that she had to answer when it came to different types of medication and their purpose and use.

When I asked Zoe about the worksheet she told me that her class had to complete it because so many kids are latch key kids and if they get sick they will know what to do when they are home alone.  She also mentioned to me that her class also had to watch the movie "Supersize Me" and she almost got sick at the end and didn't make it through the movie.

My thoughts:  I wish I had planned my work schedule better so I could home school my children.

4.  Death of Newspapers

- The only newspaper I read anymore is my local Lake Geneva Times and the Community Shopper that come 2-3 times/week to my door.  I used to subscribe to the Chicago Tribune and pick up a Milwaukee Times on Sundays but not anymore.  I can usually pick up story lines that interest me much faster online.  At a recent dinner with family I asked a full table of 10 adults who buys newspapers and the only ones who did were my sister and her boyfriend to line their gerbil's cage.

My thoughts:  I hope the great reporters of our time are able to find jobs as community journalists in online venues and I hope venture capitalists will support community journalists because good investigative reporting can take significant financial backing.

Out with the old, will the new be any better?

5.  Trickle Down Effect of News- The Insanity Factor

- My son came home from school last week and told me that a new student had just come from Mexico to their school.  The kids were teasing the child about having Swine Flu.

Earlier this week I read an article about more Swine Flu crazed action, "China Forces Dozens of Mexican Travelers Into Quarantine".

My thoughts:  Apparently leading by example is actually leading by panic.

You won't often see me rant about "How a blog sucks" or sock puppet commenting, c'mon with an adoption rate of social networking and blogging in the real estate industry of 7%, people are still learning.

But life reflections....real human stories and offline life, this is the stuff that gets me going and that I think about, write about, talk about, am "transparent" about.

I welcome your conversation on my blog and I am inviting your discussion- turbulent, reflective, or celebratory, please feel free to chime in about your recent life reflections in the comments below.

All great points.  The "news" one is a bit scary. Makes one wonder where will the news come from if there are no local reporters? Who will pay them if there is no means to do so? And who will controll the news as it gets skinny'd down to some national/international level?

And where would I get my morning fix for Dear Abby and the Comics as I enjoy my morning coffee if there wasnt a paper at my door... My dog would be upset too, its her job to go get the paper!

Rebecca,

Great thoughts and observations. Consumers (me included) seem to be seeking knowledge. The bursting amount of info available on the internet already, coupled with the immediacy now available with social networking makes for an invormed clientele.

I hope it leads to openness and a greater sense of community.

The potential  impace on professional journalism. Is a little scary to me. I think we need an active 4th estate. I hope it can find away to evolve and stay profitable.

I am flagging this for feature. Good luck.

Richard

Rebecca, very sober thoughts here!  I have to agree with most everything you say!  I wish we could home school as well -  our public schools are going to always be biased towards one particular thing or another and most of the time we have no idea what our children are being taught.  I read last week where a Michigan high school senior was berated in class by his video production teacher for viewing Fox news online in class - not against any rules - the teacher only thinks BBC and CNN/MSNBC are worthy of reading.  the matter is "under investigation".  In California a teacher lost a suit brought by a student because the teacher continually referred to Christians and religion as being untrue and followers as being brainwashed!

Newspapers would be doing better if they actually were unbiased in their coverage of events.  Studies have shown a considerable left bias in the coverage of the presidential race - this turns off half of the population!

Anyways - there is an awful lot we can all be thankful for so lets get out there and have an excellent day!

I subscribe to the Sunday paper for the coupons, and they actually had problems delivering it to us for the first two months.  I had to keep getting firmer and firmer, and finally I just said, hey guys, do you realize that I am begging for this newspaper in spite of the fact that I can get this info online.

I do hope that these talented journalists are able to veer to online journalism, and I am surprised that only 7% of the real estate industry has embraced this type of platform.

Great Post, as always!

Rebecca- I agree with fear tactics in marketing.  I hate them and personally they are turn off to me.  And since I don't consider myself any smarter than most of the population, I figure they are a turn off to most people.

I agree with Heather as I get two Sunday papers for the coupons.  I used to subscribe daily to a newspaper but I ended the subscription when I realized the delivery guy drove by faster than the speed limit and used our vehicles to aim his throws!  I can drive and pick up the Sunday papers much easier.   That would be a rant about customer service.  :)  I do hope there is a community that will provide a place for journalists online though.

Hi Rebecca - These are some of the things that have me thinking as well.  Your experience with the school teaching family values reminds me of when my younger daughter was in third grade.  She came home and said they had been given a really strange spelling test, full of easy words.  The teacher didn't give them the words to study, but just said the words aloud and the kids were supposed to write the words and a definition of each one.

The words were things like dope, weed, grass, hit, coke, and several others.  Are you noticing a pattern here?  I called the teacher and asked her about it and asked for a meeting and to see my daughter's paper.

Cathy had defined every word in the most innocent way (dope:   a dumb person, weed: a plant that you have to pull out of your garden so the flowers will grow, etc).  Her teacher explained in our meeting that this wasn't really a spelling test but a family values test.  I asked the teacher what they would do if a child answered with drug references, and she said that clearly they would have learned these terms at home, so it would be her duty to contact the police and Child Protective Services!

In other words, the main purpose of the test was to trick kids into getting their parents in trouble and maybe get themselves taken away from their parents?  I raised such a fuss about the way this was being done that the program was scrapped.  I wasn't worried about repercussions to me, because there would be no drugs found in my house.

Surely there had to be a better way of teaching family values.  Why not just teach the danger of drugs?

I love teachers and support their efforts to educate our kids, but using them as unwitting narcs seems a bit off center.

First, I want to thank everyone who has commented for your thoughtful conversation.  These are the types of things I talk about offline and I wanted to bring the conversation to an online venue.

Robert- All good points, especially the Dear Abby and the comics.  But seriously, I don't know how there could be money to pay all the reporters who turn online and who will be willing to fund these endeavors.  It's important for us to be able to get news- in depth news.

Richard- I certainly seek information online and am greatful for the wealth of knowledge available.  I do hope that standards are set in place moving forward so that citizen journalism can become a better venue, not just a futile endeavor.

Brian,  That's all true...we are turned off by news because of the bias that we see.  I see newspapers a little differently than news on t.v. but they too slant things....just as other forms of media like magazines- I have seen some really slanted r.e. stories in r.e publications over the years.

Heather- YOu would think that with declining revenue streams these difficulties wouldn't happen, but the people who deliver the paper actually have to care.  Our local paper delivery man is an older gent, hot or cold, always nice with a smile on his face.  I really actually look forward to seeing him, he takes a pride in his work....hard to find in many places these days.

Kim- Hopefully the older journalists come online and help nurture this newfound wave to make it better than before, not worse.  I still use the coupons from the paper, but most of the rest is not of any particular use to me because I am online so much.

Susan- Thank you for sharing this story.  It's unbelievable that teachers need to step into parenting.  I see why they would try....there are many absent parents these days but that's not their job  It's ours.  We all need to step back to better values.  I am glad you spoke with the school, and really, I should to.

Rebecca, I like your #3 a lot.  I never recall having to fill out a sheet about prescription drugs while I was in school and I was a latch-key kid along with my brother.  My parents told me if there were problems to call for help and go to the neighbors.

Rebecca

I really enjoy reading your bloggs. They make you think. Points # 3, 4 and 5 sadden me. # 3; I feel bad for latch key kids. Spending their hours unsupervised, watching television and eating snacks. # 4; I receive every day The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The San Diego Union Tribune. I read the Union Tribune early in the morning before my exercises, the Los Angeles Times when I eat my lunch and the New York Times at night. I sit in a very comfortable recliner to read the papers. I can not visualize reading two full pages of extensive articles in the New York Times siting at my computer. Even though some days I can not read all of them I do not suspend my subscriptions because I love reading newspapers. I am going to feel very sadden if newspapers disappear. Last; the treatment given to Mexican nationals in China was deplorable. Holding them in quarantine like animals. We have to thank the Mexican Government for the way they decided to contain the possible flue pandemic disregarding the high economic costs. Closing schools, Government, Stadiums. I wish we could have been half as considerate and efficient with our own Katrina.

Tony- So you are saying that your parents talked to you and discussed things.  Pretty important stuff, and apparently it doesn't happen as much as it used to.  That is sad.

Isaac- I think I would read printed papers if I had more time, but now, everytime recently that I have bought one, it goes to waste.  Truth is, I have access to so much of that online now too, and work online so it is a matter of convenience for me to read online.  I still like books and magazines where I can mark up the sides of the pages with my thoughts or tear things out. I print online reports and read them...but for news, I get that online now.  I remember when I was young my parents would always get the New York Times and the whole morning they spent reading it and doing the crossword puzzle.  My sister and I would read the comics.

As to the last part of your comment, we do have to be watchful of what goes on outside of our own because it all effects us in some way or shape or form.  I cannot imagine being locked up like a prisoner in a foreign country just because I was from that country.  Deplorable and a few other words I can think of and if these types of actions are ignored we have fallen far.
