Consumers: Beware of Craigs List Scams!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams

Yesterday, I was contacted by a young woman who is looking to lease a house.  She said she had been looking at ads on Craigs List every day in hopes of finding the right house, at the right price, and a homeowner that would work with a nice person with some credit issues.

After speaking to the young woman about what she could afford and some of her credit issues (she skipped out on a lease) I explained to her that for her budget and rental history it would be difficult to lease a house, but, I would definitely keep my eyes and ears open around my office.

This morning, I get an email from her asking about a particular house being advertised on Craigs List for $750 a month.  The email she sent me included an email from the property owner to her.

This is what it said... (The email subject was "$750/3br - Great Beautiful Home for a Small Family")

Hello.
Am owner of the property which you are requesting to rent,it isstill available for rent you can go and view it any time you prefer,But there is nobody to show you inside of the house presently I and my family just move down to Cotonou in Republic of Benin due to my present condition which is personal and for some other reason that is important to my family. So these is why we have advertise the house for rent since there is nobody to leave in it for the long period my family will be spending aboard,We're looking to rent the house to a very clean and nice person who take good care of the house as if it belongs to him/her and if you interested in renting the house kindly let me know as there some questions i will like to ask you, here with me i have the keys and other necessary documents to the house. Here is the address incase you need to see it

Thanks and waiting to read from you soon.

Common sense told me that this smelled bad. Real bad.  So I looked up the address in MLS, and sure enough, it is listed for lease for $1,250, not $750 as the email advertised.  Now it really smelled bad, so I call the listing agent to let her know that I believe her listing has been "high jacked" and being used in a scam.  She knew exactly what I was talking about, and let me know that this is the second time this has happened with this listing and by the same person.  The scam artist even used the actual homeowners name and created a yahoo email account as the actual homeowners name.  This particular scammer is actually lives in Puerto Rico.

The scammers hook consumers in by the very cheap rent and get them to send deposit money, and in return the scammer will send the keys to the house.  Obviously, there are no keys to be sent and the unsuspecting consumer is out a few hundred dollars.

If you are looking to buy, sell, or rent a home, it's always best to work with a professional Real Estate Agent and avoid getting trapped by internet scammers.

I can't believe what some people will do to scam others out of money Mike.  The wording in that "ad" alone should have sent your propsective client's red flags off.  Good for you for following up, as in every case buyer beware and having a good representative - a Realtor - to assist you can save you lots of trouble in the end.

Karen, Thanks for commenting.

I know, I was floored when I spoke to the actual listing agent.  The scary thing is that people in situations like this fall for these scams either because they offer no credit check or low rent.  I'm glad she contacted me and asked my opinion before sending this crook money for keys.

This Amazes me in two ways.  The person advertising the phoney listing and the consumer who is willing to send money out of the country with the hopes of receiving the keys.  I just completed my Real Estate Schooling and I don't recal anything about this in my class text...lol.  I am glad that you posted this blog Mike to alert the public of what is going on out there.
