WWW (Wordless Wednesday with Words): Please take care of Old Glory

Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart Realty West CalBRE #01458572

If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and leave a comment.Since my dad was in the Navy, I have a certain respect for the military, the United States of America, and the flat of the United States of America, also known as Old Glory.

There are protocols for not only displaying the Flag, but for when the Flag should not be displayed, and how to properly dispose of the Flag.

I previewed a property today that was owned by a Major General. Now one would think that a Major General would know everything there is to know about the Flag of the United States of America, and I won't fault him for proudly displaying the Flag 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Therein lies the problem with this flag, though:

Damaged United States Flag

The Flag should never be allowed to deteriorate to this state. As "Dear Abby" said in a recent column (loosely quoted), "If you fly a flag in this condition, you are stating that you believe the United States of America is an old and tattered country, past its prime and usefulness." It is anything but.

Now I understand that the Major General here is probably retired, and probably can't get up to the top of his roof anymore to remove that flag and replace it. That's no excuse. Children, or high school or college students, would probably be proud to remove this flag and replace it for a few dollars. As Nike said, "Just do it!"

If you are not familiar with the protocols for displaying flags and retiring flags, check out the web site for the Flag Keepers. You can also anonymously report tattered flags.

Please take care of Old Glory. She deserves it, and after all, She takes care of you.

Hi Jim,

Oh I'm with you when it comes to Old Glory. I've got a flag pole in my front yard, it's illuminated for night-time. I love it!

Hey Jim: My Dad was also in the Navy and I too respect the flag. We had a military service for Daddy, when he died. They do a beautiful job folding the flag. It saddens me to see a flag trying to wave when it is old, faded and ragged.

I also love the picture of your kitty cat.

Great point. I noticed that my flag is starting to show signs of wear and a replacement is on my list. I will burn (with respect) the old one...

Hey Jim, I would of tried to get some of the boy scouts in the area to help this man out and replace his flag for him. It would be great for the boy scouts and also the major general.

Morning Jim,

That's kinda sad for this old soldier, he truly might not be able....there could be many reasons.  I thought I read that their are organizations, like Joesph mentioned above, who will assist in maintaining the proper flag protocol.  I hope you help this veteran as obviously you care.

I do think it is so sad when I see a flag in this condition and it makes me actually upset when I see it at a business. It tells me they originally put it there to try to drum up business and then just forgot about it after that.

Part of this countries problem is respect.  And it starts with the flag!

Jim, great post!  I couldn't agree more.  I have had to retire a flag on occasion it was a very solemn experience.  One that I am honored to have been able to do, but I still couldn't help think of all the brave men and women that fought and died so that I have the freedoms that I enjoy.  Once again, great post!

Hey, Lynda.

We had a lighted flag pole in our yard when my dad was alive. I sometimes sat on the front porch after supper waiting for the light to come on.

There are many local Veterans groups that will collect old worn flags for proper disposal. Please display  proudly.

I have a huge old American Flag that i have had packed away in a trunk for about 30 years.  Supposedly it was taken down from a famous landmark building which is why it was significant, however I have long since forgot what building it was.

I completely agree with regards to flying and displaying the American Flag. In my area there are Veteran asssociations that  will collect and dispose of old flags.
