Perhaps the best kind of party in Washington, DC is the book party. And last night I went to a really fun one.
I went to a celebration to welcome Martin Walker's Bruno - Chief of Police to Amazon and to bookshelves around the country. It's a novel set in a small French village that made me want to call my travel agent and head back to la Belle France - the cafes, the markets, the food, the fleas, and the charm.
As I walked in the front door, I ran into a colleague from my days at the old Civil Aeronautics Board. Martin's wife, Julia, outdid herself with the food and certainly lived up to her reputation as one of Washington's truly great cooks. And there were lots of Martin and Julia's friends and colleagues, and neighbors.
The party was at their house, my listing, Rosedale Cottage. The food was amazing, the people were amazing, and I'm enjoying the post-party read!
The book party is, I think, the best part of writing and launching a book. And this party made me think back to mine.
I'd been through all the writing and editing and arguments about grammar styles and cover art. I got the big box of the finished product, The Irreverent Guide To Real Estate, from my publisher.
I invited everyone I know in the world, and pulled out all the stops with food and wine. The house was totally clean and didn't smell like cats. Then I sqeezed in a manicure and pedicure, put curls in my hair and changed into my lucky red dress. Their were prayers to the book party gods that there wouldn't be a blizzard or monsoon. And then there was a plea to Willie the Labradoodle to please, please not hump the guests' legs or dive into the pate.
And you know what? it was better than even, oh, I dunno, maybe a wedding? It's all fun and no pressure. Makes me want to write another book!
