Wow! I lost five minutes of my life and I'll never get them back!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Clock in Senoia GeorgiaI have had the feeling all week that I had lost something. I couldn't quite put my finger on it but there was this nagging undercurrent of deprivation that permeated my psyche.

And then this morning, the disturbance in my force became apparent. I was running a little late with my morning post, which I normally try to publish at 8:00 EDST. The clock on my computer said that I had five minutes left to do so.

And then in the background, I heard that little pinging chiming sound that alerts viewers that Sportscenter on ESPN is restarting.

What??? Sportscenter recycles on the hour or the half hour. Not five minutes before the hour. I looked at the kitchen clock and it said 8:01 A.M.

Then the horror of the reality of the situation hit me. Could my computer's clock be off by five minutes? It didn't seem possible, as the clock is set to automatically synchronize with the Windows time server.

I opened up the clock adjustment and manually synchronized the clock. Amazingly, five minutes disappeared as I lurched ahead into the future. Five minutes, gone forever, and they will never to be recovered.

1990 Mazda MiataI have my theories. I have been driving pretty fast lately, and I usually have my laptop with me, so I must assume that the computer's clock was affected by time-velocity relativity. The faster I traveled, the slower the clock on my computer moved relative to an outside observer.

So I need to do one of two things: I either need to check the clock on my computer more often, or I need to slow down when I drive.

Hey, how hard is it to check a clock every once in a while?

It's not coming back ... and I know that I;ll need those minutes later. LOL

I'm trying to figure out how to reverse the process! ;)

Ah, you are correct, If the computer was with me while I was driving, we would both lose apparent time to an outside observer.

So I wasn't experiencing the loss of relative time, I was only suffering the ill effects of a discrepancy with other clocks outside the system.

That is, unless someone else has been using both my car AND my computer ... and this is some sort of sinister plot to undermine me. Yeah, that's got to be it!

Richard, I'm not surprised to find that you've been driving faster than the speed of "time", but I am a little surprised that you drive that little "girlie" Miata.

Richard, great post.  And you made me look and check my computer's time.  I did loose a few days a while back.  Must have been the warp factor from the new Star Trek movie.

HI Richard:  I, like you, are"time-driven".  My computer mysteriously changes time every few weeks but usually in one hour increments.  It drives me crazy.  I correct the problem and, whammo, a few weeks later, the problem reemerges.

As you might imagine, I like all of my clocks set correctly ... and all of my guitars in tune! But my office ... that's a whole different story.

Funny you should say that ... a salesman walked into the office Friday, and walked straight to our office manager who is a 26 year old female and asked her" "Is that your Miata parked outside?"

I drive a girlie car because I got a super deal on it, it's fun, and it's cheap on gas ... and I have only two or three to go before I can say that every woman in the office has taken a ride in the "Red Car!" lol

You WILL regain those 5 minutes when the state police pull over that fast & pretty red car. Time stands still as a trooper moseys up to your window. ;-)

I lost a lot more than five minutes of my life that will never return when I watched the movie Obsession with my wife and some friends the other day.

There are sinister forces at work here, that's for sure!

Yeah, I can't afford to give up any more sleep!

It's the principle of the thing ... five minutes here, five minutes there ... pretty soon you'll miss a break! ;)

Hello Richard,

Great looking car....I love it!

There is never enough time for me to do all the things I want and need to do. I would hate to lose five minutes. I always set my house and car clocks ahead about 10 minutes. This give me the idea that I have time to get ready and be out the door arriving where I'm supposed to be on time!  Crazy hugh...! I like to be on time.

I had a client get into my car one time and immediately related to that clock being 10 minutes ahead. She told me that she understands totally and that she has set her clocks ahead for years!  I guess I'm not only nut out there.

Take care...enjoy the weekend in your hot little car.  Hopefully the sun will shine on you.

The worst is when my phone shuts off for no reason in the middle of the night and then my phone alarm does not go off in the morning. Hasn't happened in awhile, but really gets the day off to a bad start. (knocking on wood)

I agree with Gary. If 5 minutes bothers you, try my schedule. What's with the computer clocks? Is this a gag? I've never had that happen.

I think Einstein said in his theory of relativity you move forward in time.  I guess you weren't driving fast enough.  I think you move forward. don't really remember.

I think you were probably stuck in the space time continuum. It will be ok. You probably had your memory wiped, but lived a whole lifetime in that 5 minutes.

This is priceless!!

From time to time, I notice that certain TV shows are starting a minute or two early.  Or, are they???

I rely on the time showing on my computer, but for some strange reason, it has been known to be a minute or two slow.  Of course, I adjust the time, as you did, but it's disquieting, to say the least.

When I meet my maker, I'm going to present a bill for the time lost.  it's got to amount to at least 10-15 minutes by now.  I want to go back and enjoy those few minutes before becomming a statistic.

Shucks, every minute counts.
