Just what is rain water harvesting ?
The principle of collecting and using precipitation from a catchment surface.

An old technology sure is gaining a lot of popularity in a new technology age. Rain water harvesting is enjoying a rejuvenation of sorts in the country, but you can traces its history back to biblical times. Extensive harvesting of rain water existed 4000 years ago in the Palestine and Greece. Even in ancient Rome, the residences were built with individual cisterns and paved courtyards to capture rain water to augment water from city's aqueducts. And as early as the third millennium BC, there were farming communities in Baluchistan that impounded rain water and used it for irrigation, rubbles of stone build dames, have been found in Baluchistan and Kutch. And some other areas.
You may very will be asking, Why should I be doing rain water harvesting?
That is simple to answer: Rain water harvesting is essential because:
Our surface water is inadequate to meet our demands of it, and we have to depend on ground water.
Due to our rapid urbanization, infiltration of rain water into the sub-soil has decreased drastically and recharging of our ground water has diminished.
Our over exploitation of our ground water resource has resulted in a decline of water levels in a lot of areas of the country.
To enhance the availability of ground water in specific places.
To improve our water quality in aquifers.
To help improve our vegetation cover.
To help raise the water levels in wells and to bore wells that are drying up.
To also help reduce our power consumption.
So you see, by havesting rain water. It sure does help us in a lot of areas of our lives.
