If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and leave a comment.About a year ago some neighbors moved in down the street from us, a couple with a three-legged dog. I often see them walking the dog around the neighborhood but had never had the opportunity to talk with them until today when she was out walking.

I grabbed my camera and ran out to ask her if I could take a picture of her dog because I though he -- turns out he is a she -- was so beautiful, even with the missing leg.

Abby, the La Mesa three-legged dogHer name is Abby, and she was rescued from an animal shelter in Florida. Abby had been left in a cage in a house and was starved and emasciated when she was found. She had caught her right front leg in the cage trying to get out and had mangled it so badly that it had to be amputated in order for Abby to live.

Abby must be the friendliest dog I've ever met, taking to me immediately with a few million licks, wanting to shake my hand with her remaining front paw, and wanting me to rub her tummy. She is beautiful and very well trained.

Many animal shelters have trouble finding forever homes for injured or sick pets, so I was very happy to hear the story of Abby.

So true....I noticed in a magazine recently that Sandra Bullock has a dog which she got from a shelter which is missing both front legs...very sweet animals need homes.

Hey, Karen.

Yes, I saw that article. I think Sarah McLachlin also has some injured pets that she got from shelters.

Hello Jim,

Another great post!  A sad story with a happy ending!  Abby is one of the lucky ones, she's a beautiful little dog.  I'm so happy that she found a loving home.  We have a non-profit rescue goup here in Calvert County, Maryland (in Prince Frederick) named "Pets with Disabilities" - I've written a few posts for them.  Some of the dogs & cats stories are unbelievable!  Thank you for sharing Abby's story.

Rita

I watch animal planet all the time, and I see these stories...so sad...but it is great that she was rescued....I really don't understand how people can neglect animals...

Hey, Matt.

Is that what a three-legged animal is called, a tripod?

Hey, Matt.

It is nice to come home to Zoey the Cool Cat in the house waiting for me, especially when Russel's out at a home inspector or working with one of his other Clients.

Hey, Rita.

I remember the stories that came out of Hurricane Katrina, some truly heartbreaking.

My marketing guru goes out during natural disasters and helps rescue wildlife and pets.

Hey, Konnie.

I don't either, but then we see parents neglecting their children, their spouses, etc., so I guess neglecting a "stupid animal" isn't that far removed.

Jim, sad and happy story.  We have a 11 year old rescued terrier of sorts.  She is almost blind and has had a few mini-strokes, but she is still kickin.  Plays with Izzy valiantly, but since she is 14 pounds and Izzy tops out at 110 the play is one sided.

Hey, Jack.

I think I saw your almost blind dog over at your blog, getting in and out of the bathtub. Either that or Russel told me about your blind dog and its antics.

Jim, another sad story with a happy ending.  Would that all our sad animals stories could end that way.  How she must have suffered till she was rescued.  Thanks for the sweet uplifting post.  A nice way to start my day!

Jim, what a great story, I find it, that the three legged critters do not have a problem when it comes to their positive attitudes. They act as if they had four leggs. The problem is usually with the humans:) We need psycho therapy to adjust they on the other hand are well adjusted.Go figuer:)

Hey, Terry.

I used to want to volunteer at an animal shelter, but except for the no-kill shelters we have now, there are too many unhappy enders. There's a series on Animal Planet about the Animal Police who rescue abused pets. Almost all the stories have happy endings, but, of course, they are edited for television. I always wonder just how many don't make television because of much sadder endings.
