About a year ago some neighbors moved in down the street from us, a couple with a three-legged dog. I often see them walking the dog around the neighborhood but had never had the opportunity to talk with them until today when she was out walking.
I grabbed my camera and ran out to ask her if I could take a picture of her dog because I though he -- turns out he is a she -- was so beautiful, even with the missing leg.
Her name is Abby, and she was rescued from an animal shelter in Florida. Abby had been left in a cage in a house and was starved and emasciated when she was found. She had caught her right front leg in the cage trying to get out and had mangled it so badly that it had to be amputated in order for Abby to live.
Abby must be the friendliest dog I've ever met, taking to me immediately with a few million licks, wanting to shake my hand with her remaining front paw, and wanting me to rub her tummy. She is beautiful and very well trained.
Many animal shelters have trouble finding forever homes for injured or sick pets, so I was very happy to hear the story of Abby.

So true....I noticed in a magazine recently that Sandra Bullock has a dog which she got from a shelter which is missing both front legs...very sweet animals need homes.
