I ran across this website over the weekend, while researching modular homes: http://www.claytonihouse.com/

Clayton Homes, one of the largest manufactured home companies in the US, introduces this new green technology, solar powered, modern design, manufactured home.  It features a sleek contemporary design, walls of windows, clerestories, and many of the features we typically find in Modern Architecture. The roof-line reminds me of the Butterfly Roof Alexander homes found in Palm Springs.

Historically, the modular home industry has not done well as the cost  has exceeded the price of site built homes.  However, the i-House is starting at $100/sf, which is relatively affordable.  The home can be delivered to your site within 2 months, they claim.  Becaue they are being built by a major manufacturer, they are able to keep costs reasonable.

I'm looking forward to seeing one of these home in person! But I think this is a great step for the modular home industry, and definitely not your grandfather's mobile home!

Clayton Homes makes a lot of manufactured housing here in our area, but I have yet to see an iHouse. Very cool indeed!
