Jane's Day as a Realtor: Etiquette in making an appointment on someone's listing

By
Real Estate Agent with More Realty, Englewood Cliifs, NJ

Received a call from an agent at 7:24 this evening.

Agent: "this is XXX from XYZ realty. 123 Main st, i want to show it"

Me: "ok, when did you want to show it"

Agent: " today"

Me: "um what time?"

Agent: " in 20 minutes"

Me: pause(in my head.. 20 minutes? you're giving me 20 minute notice at around dinner time?) Oh, ok, lemme call the owner and see if she's home and I'll call you back"

I call the owner, she's not home, i leave a message hoping she'll call back

5 minutes later, the agent calls

Me: "sorry but i don't think she's home,so i don't think you can see it today "

Agent: "that;s not nice"

Me: " excuse me?"

Agent: "your listing says easy to show, normally that means it's really easy to show or there's a lockbox"

few words exchange and our voices start to get louder

Me: finally, in a nasty tone, semi screaming "well, excuse me but normally it is very easy to show but you can't expect to call me after 7Pm and give me 20 minute notice and expect to get in.. " blah blah blah : attmept to slam the cell phone down

i was mad and annoyed that this agent was yelling at me.. i mean i don't think any agent has ever yelled at me and for what, not getting her an appointment? she is just so mean!!!

i checked my showing instruction and it read, " easy appointment" i don't think this translates to 'all agents must be allowed to show no matter what the circumstance is, and if it can't be arranged, the listing agent must be blamed"

well, this agent called about about 25 minutes later(while writing this post) and apologized about overreacting. both of us were now toned down and she said she'd call me tomorrow, with some notice to set up an appointment. listening to her now, she didn't seem like a bad person. Maybe she was having a bad day but, you really can't take that out on a fellow Realtor, right!

Jane, something must be in the water on the east coast.  I just read another post about people yelling and being rude.  Fortunately in this case, she called back and apologized.  :)
