work~life balance

Have you ever had this said to you? "All you ever do is work."

I think many of us at some point or another has heard that phrase from the people in our lives, but I'd like to say that I'm not suggesting we shortchange our work life in order to have a personal life.  I believe that work is a part of life, we all need to provide for our families and it's especially meaningful if you have passion for what you do.

What things do you love to do?  Spend time with family and friends, read, cook, volunteer, a hobby, exercise - what's on your list of favorite things to do?

Work might very well be on that list.  Or perhaps it's not the work you're doing today but what you want to be doing at some point.

How do you spend your time?  Are you currently working long hours?  What do you do before work?  How about after work?  Do you ever take a day or even a half day off?  When it comes to work it's important to think about how much of that time spent working is doing the things you love about your work.  Does it make you want to spring out of bed in the morning or do you dread it?  Perhaps you're missing balance.

Look at your list of favorite things to do - are you incorporating them into your day/week?  Can you make room for them?  Is it possible to get help in certain areas to free up some time to do those things?  For those of us that are type A's it's often very hard to let go, say no and not be in control of every aspect of our work.  But what are the alternatives?  Will be so tied to our work that there's no one there at the end of the day to enjoy the fruits of our labor?

Finding balance between all the things you love - those things on your list and yes, work too, will ensure that you are providing a complete life experience for yourself and the people in your life.  Think about it, if you're cooped up in an office all day and into the night, you could easily see that exercise might be lacking or you're feeling the effects of burnout. Think about how great it feels to be walking down the street on a nice day even for a few minutes to get some fresh air and the effects that has on you when you get back to your work. The point is, sometimes we all need a break - it can do wonders for filling our buckets and when our buckets are full - we have more great things to give.

I like to think about it in this way: you're not going to eat the same meal for dinner every night and feel fulfilled - you need some variety.

Here are four things you can focus on to ensure you're keeping things balanced and interesting:

Set limits for yourself1. Keep a calendar - schedule all your non work stuff first - appointments, exercise, family time and events.  Now add all the stuff you need to do for work.  I highly recommend leaving some space in there for things that may come up so that you are not overscheduled and overwhelmed.

2. Set limits for yourself.  Perhaps you were like me, spending many hours throughout your day on social networking sites and then realizing you still had a pile of work to get to and not enough time to get it all done.  I have heard many people say they just don't have the time to be on social networking sites because it takes up too much time. I have learned to set aside chunks of time each day to dedicate to certain tasks so that I'm better able to manage all that I need to do.

3. Pretend you're dating again.  "Date" your spouse, significant other, family members, friends and even yourself.  Schedule time with them and commit to it the same way you would a work appointment or doctor's appointment.  It doesn't have to be anything extravagant either - it could be as simple as walking with a friend, cooking dinner together or setting aside some time for yourself to enjoy that book that you bought months ago that's still sitting there unread.

4. Reflect, examine and change.  I have realized over the past week that too often our lives get off track and off balance and we might not realize it until it's too late.  We find ourselves caught up in our routines, feeling trapped and unfulfilled because we are not giving ourselves a balance in all that we do.  When we step back to reflect, we are ensuring we are living a balanced life.  "It's your life - live it your way - not the way you think others want you to live it."

Find your center - get balanced

When I think of balance I imagine a dancer - they are taught over long periods of time and countless hours of practice to find their center and they can instantly return their balance.  It's up to us all to find our center because until we do we will continue to be off balance and at odds with our world and ourselves.

What will you do today to restore balance to your life?

If you feel balanced, how are you achieving that?

If I don't work, and work effectively, I'll be totally unbalanced in a real bad way.  Hopefully not too much work as to achieve burn out, Great idea on scheduling events. I am terrible at this.

Anna Marie - I like the philosphical edge in this post.  I was always taught that moderation is key, not that I've totally followed that advice.  Most of us could use more balance in our life, including me.

What will you do today to restore balance to your life?  Variety is the spice of life.  Perhaps I need to go "Old Bay" on life a bit more often.  Today is rarely a bad day to start.

Wonderful post, Anne Marie.  I am a Type A personality as well.  My husband and I have just started "dating" again.  Our son is now a teenager, so going out with the parental types is not top of his list and I don't have to worry about getting a babysitter.  I also tend to just start work earlier and not work weekends.  It's helped me find my center.  My son and I have "date nights", too, when my husband is busy late at night with work, school or errands.

Ann Marie, I would like to say I'm centered but I think of myself more as a toy top spinning in perfect control until the end of the day when I start to slow down and crash...

Anne Marie...

I used to hear complaints from our Sons when they were growing up. I used to take Saturdays off and do things that they wanted to do. I actually learned a lot from them. Would you like me to come to your house and change the oil in your car? :)

Ann Marie, Great Post!  I was just thinking that making my 7:30 am exercise class twice a week was too much during this crazy spring market. WHAT??!! That is exaclty what I need to keep going.  Your post reminded me of what I always tell my kids: Moderation in everything--including work!

Anne Marie-

Perfect, balance is important.  After some work and writing a blog post this morning, I took Zander for a long walk, well, he was on his bike, after lunchtime.  It was awesome.  I am not as good at balancing in the winter as I am in the summer.  I probably get more burnout in the winter than the summer because I find myself cooped up inside way too often:-)

Great post...there is a guy on Twitter who makes $10,000 A Day telling people that 80% of what people do can be delegated to able virtual assistants, and he has the company that does it.  He is in his mid 20's, and he has it figured out.  It is amazing how many of us do tasks that would be efficiently handled by someone else and take us a long time to do.  This is great advice, thanks Anne Marie.  Alexandra Seigel

So Anne Marie -- I'm confessing -- I'm out of balance.  I love my work and work far too many hours a week.  But, I'm also realizing that I'm out of balance so have been setting some limits and scheduling in things that are important to me.  Thanks for the eloquent reminder -- love your blog as usual!

Heather - lol - you sound like me - we'll do it together!

Naoma - Excellent!  So happy to hear you're making balance a priority - enjoy your time with family.

Patricia - thank you and yes, there are days when it just seems impossible but doing some of these things may make it all less overwhelming.

Margaret - thank you - yes, it's something I once read but don't know about it personally - I have no balance and two left feet - lol.

Wayne - You said - it - work effectively that is a key to achieving balance and yes, setting a schedule for many of the little tasks can also give you a true sense of accomplishment that will help you move onto the other stuff.

Jason - thank you, funny I have been feeling quite philosophical the past few days and happy you picked up on that.  Yes, we all know what to do it's the doing that gets us.  Yes, get out that Old Bay and get started - love it!  Thanks for subscribting too - it's an honor to have the top PA blogger!

William - How nice!  Yes, while I love all the valuable information on this network it's sometimes the posts that encourage me, inspire me and give me a soft kick in the butt that get me moving.  Hope you will bookmark this one as a reminder for those days you need it :)

Sheldon - thank you my friend - yes, with all your listings and your new family member I can understand why - so happy I could spread some motivation your way.

Jason - Great point - you must have been the one I was talking about in my post when I talked about being passionate about your work - doesn't seem like work when you love it doesn't it.  Thanks for stopping by and also for threatening to chat again - LOL - just teasing - we'll catch up soon.

Heather - thank you and I love your comment and can completely relate - my husband and I schedule date nights too and then I also set aside date nights with my daughter to do girl stuff like spa night - it makes all the difference to us.  Love that you're making the most of your time with each of them - keep it up!

Paul - LOL - love this comment and I think many of us can relate to that.  At least you're centered!

TLW - I'm so happy you asked - yes, my car is low on oil - how did you know that?  You are physic and all knowing!

Holly - thank you.  LOL, now that comment is priceless.  Isn't funny how we can talk ourselves out of things and say we don't have enough time.  Moderation is key - on everything - thank you for stopping by to share this great comment.

Morgan - I completely agree - I had that moment on Sunday when my daughter looked at me with a bounce in her step and asked "are you having a great mothers day?"  It was priceless to me and I didn't want to be anywhere else and didn't have a care in the world.  Thanks for reminding us all that when we set aside that time it makes us truly feel great.

Rebecca - I am so happy to hear that you stepped away and enjoyed some quality time with Zander.  I'm sure it was awesome for him too since I know he watches how hard you work.  I'm with you - bring on summer and we'll make sure we each keep the balance.

Alexandra - thank you and yes, you make a great point - we often forget that we can get so much time back by simply delegating tasks that someone else is better equipped to handle.  I hope many will take his advice - not just because it's what I do - but because it will truly benefit and grow someone's business - just ask my clients how many listings they're juggling!

Margaret - speaking of clients :) LOL - it's ok, you're secret is safe with me - I won't tell anyone.  So happy you are realizing that you need to set limits - you're only one person who does quality work and you want to maintain that.  I know I owe you something too - it's coming - had a computer issue but resolved mostly now - lol.  Will keep you posted.

Gary - thank you and actually after I posted this blog I have to tell you I felt that it was a Gary Woltal style blog.  Hope you don't mind me saying that - but you always get me thinking and exploring my mind and how to simplify things that we all make so difficult - while I try to have my own style, I often feel many can relate to the "get you thinking" and "get you motivated" posts of which I feel you've perfected.  Basically I'm saying you often inspire me and wasn't sure if you knew that. Anyways, wow - I'm impressed that you've committed to yoga and so happy that you are seeing such great benefits from it- ok, there you go again inspiring me...

Balance is hard to achieve when you balance 5 people. The hustle of ball, cheer and dance with them and then business. No right now there isnt much balance. I wish!

Laura M - thank you - so nice to see you and I'm with you working from home can be a challenge and often we get pulled in many directions with kids, work and managing our work and our clients so I'm happy to hear that you grabbed that icecream cone and it made everything alright again.  Now I want icecream!

Greg - I would have to say that as someone who has read your posts - I would agree - you do have fun and if it's not fun - you'll make sure it will be eventually - I love that attitude!

Mark - I like your thinking and approach Mark!

Sheila - Thank you my friend - I think often we need a little reminder and to be able to share that we are not alone in being unbalanced - it gets to even the best of us - it's being able to recognize it - luckily I have my daughter who asks me if I want to do something with her and that stops me dead in my tracks.

Jess - Between you being a juggler and me feeling like I'm on a trapeze - we could be quite an act together!

Alexander - Great quote - it's so true about extremes in either direction.  Life is great and looking for the positive and what can be learned from every experience is what it's all about.

Rita - It is funny that sometimes we come across many similar posts and I often find I must be getting a message to slow down and take a good hard look much like you are doing.

Kerry - I agree with you - they can get blurry either by us trying to do it all or others thinking we can too.  It really comes down to scheduling, not over committing and for me sometimes learning to say no.

Laura - LOL - I'm with you - we all have so many roles and so many things that pull us in many directions - I think I spent more time in my car yesterday dropping off, picking up and doing it several times in one day - we are always seeking balance - a search that goes on....

Adrian - I completely agree - we can convince and talk ourselves into why we need to be working and why something has to get done, we can also say we don't have enough time to exercise or take a break - we are our own worst enemies aren't we?  All I know is I want people in my life at the end of the day to enjoy it all with so I am making sure I find and hold onto the balance.

Anne Marie, this is a wonderfully written story of how we should balance our lives. I rest during the winter when I "hibernate" and I work like crazy in the spring, summer and fall. I guess I am just a little girl teddy bear! I love to dance though and I will balance on point from now on!!

I am late to comment because I took two days off to fish(having fresh fish tacos tonight). My girlfirend and I have been taking ballroom dancing classes for awhile. It was awkward at first, because you have to learn the steps. But after a few months of learning the cha cha I wouldn't say that we are ready for DWTS, but once the steps are natural, then the fun of putting in flourishes and variations begins. Real Estate is like that, if we can focus and getting through the learning curve, then the fun begins. If the work becomes fun, we do better and enjoy it more.

Hi Anne Marie, I think you're so right--we definitely need to balance our lives. We can't be all about work and not spend any time with our friends, family and taking care of ourselves. The opposite would be just as bad too. Finding balance is a difficult thing to achieve, but developing good time management skills and learning to prioritize certainly helps. I like your idea of scheduling your family events and personal things first and then putting in your work stuff.

Have a great day,

Anne Rains

Caren - thank you and I think there's something about the winter that makes many of us hibernate and the great weather changes our attitude and gives us that feeling that we can do it all.  Keep on dancing Caren!

Joe - How nice, what kind of fish- love fish tacos.  Love that you're taking ballroom dancing lessons - I've been trying to get my husband to do that with me but his travel schedule often gets in the way.  It sounds like you have a great approach to dancing and real estate and I couldn't agree with you more - when the work becomes fun we do it better, we enjoy it and everyone sees and feels it.  I truly enjoyed your comment Joe.

Anne - I agree - we can't be so focused in either direction because something will truly suffer and that's good for our spirit, relationships and our careers.  It really does come down to managing our time and setting limits - something that always needs our focus.  Each weekend I look at the week ahead - schedule in all the events we have (with 4 girls - it's a lot) and then I go from there so I know what I can/can't do for work and how I can fit it all in so that everyone is happy.

Dorie - You are so right- what's important to me may not be as important to you and you captured my exact thoughts "know yourself and what makes you happy" and you will find your balance.  Thank you for always contributing great value to my posts.

Nannette - Thank you so much and yes, I will certainly share my secrets with you - if you like I can give you a quick 10 minute tutorial if that will help you - will email.  That's fabulous that you had a coach that helped you get centered on how to keep balance in your schedule.

Linda - Yes, I think it's something we all want and need but all too often we are running from one thing to the next and feeling like we can't get it done.  So happy my suggestions were helpful to you.  Thanks for stopping by to comment and add to my post.
