Embrace the dandelions: our new paradigm

I was leaving for my first appointment of the day recently and I was admiring the beautiful sunny day and freshly green grass of spring.  But wait, there are dandelions everywhere!  Dandelions: the destroyer of lawns and enemy of the weekend gardener.  Ugh, need to weed and feed this weekend.  Or do I?  They really are pretty little things after all.  Their sunny little yellow faces peeking out of the vast expanse of green turning to soak up the sun.  Aren't dandelions in a sense one of those things we rely on to tell us that spring and summer are here?  Just like the birds suddenly chirping after a silent winter and the grass turning greener by the day?

Maybe our current economic times are just like winter turning into spring.  Perhaps we need to seek out and embrace a different harbinger of spring.  The good times won't roll any time soon, but we can learn to appreciate aspects of our new situation: Progressive innovations, people getting back to basics, coming together to solve problems and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

As long as we don't let the thistles overrun the yard, a few dandelions may be a good thing.
