For those of you who have not yet made a decision on what to move to if you have TP6i, you need to do this now!

If you are going to move to Top Producer 7i prior to the end of the month when support ends for 6i, you're fine. If you are going to continue to use 6i beyond the end of May 2007, you need to do an EXPORT, not a backup, now!

If your TP6i crashes after the end of this month, or your hard drive crashes, or your computer is stolen, your backup is useless. All your data will be inaccessible because the backup is only good if you can restore it to your TP6i software, or give it to Top Producer to convert it into 7i.

Now don't go getting all upset at Top Producer. A backup, as opposed to an export, is usable only in the program it was created from, and would be true of Agent Office or any other proprietary software.

If you decide not to go with TP7i, you'll need this export, so you can import it into whatever program you decide to use. If you have an export in an ASCII, CSV, or TXT format, that data can be imported into any other database program. That's why you need to keep a current export, as well as a current backup.

To do an export from TP6i:

Click on - Setup, Export Data, ASCII file export, Display all contacts, Select all, Export contacts, Click on ‘Add' for every field, Export, Key in a file name ending in ".csv" ( no parenthesis), pick a "Folder" to save it into, click OK.

Keep this export current, and no matter which program you move to, you'll have your data ready for import.

With regards to what program you are going to move to, keep in mind that TP7i will be able to import almost ALL of your data from TP6i, they do it for you, for free, and they are currently running a promotion which is for a $60 credit to upgrade to 7i. You can order 7i on my site at http://GaryDavidHall.com/topproducer.htm

Using the export of the 6i data for import into another program is limited to the fields you will see when you are clicking on "Add" when you are doing the export from 6i.

I moved to 7i 2 years ago and have been very happy with it. I love having access to my database whereever I am.

Thanks for writing this , it gives me a few things to think about. We have three family members in the business, with my mother in-law using 6i, myself using Agent Office, and my wife trying to decide which one is the best for her.

With the 6i, my mother in-law and her assistant like the fact that it is resident on their desktop, and that there are no monthly fees associated with it. I also like a number of the features in it, which helps them do their job, though they could be doing A LOT more with it then they are.

I like the AO for many of the same reasons, no fees, resident on my machine and the many features available but in comparison it appears that the 6i is a little better program. It just isn't available for purchase any more that I am aware of.

As my mother in-law will be retiring in the not too distant future, I am tempted to have my wife use the 6i and migrate my stuff over to it as time permits. There is no point in reinventing the wheel, and since the ladies are working closely together it is better to have one system rather than two.

But then the dsmise of support for 6i comes into play, though I am not aware of any real problems that have been encountered in the last couple of years. Decisions, decisions....

BTW, I am going to be checking out some the services you offer, such as the Trans-plans for AO as I really think some improvements could be made in the basic package and it sounds like you have some great ideas.

I realize there are many people out there needing to make a decision. I just want to make sure that no one thinks that their data is available for general use if all they have is a backup. You need an EXPORT :-)

Thanx for the Export Tip.  I too don't feel like switching just yet from 6i.  I haven't had to use or pay for tech support in some time now (2 yrs).  I have tweaked my TP letters, action plans, and follow up over the years and try to keep up with my records without the use of an assisitant, etc.

I live in a resort area where i can't always get a wireless connection (like at open houses where i might have time to work on stuff) and want to work remotely without having to pay dearly for it but i guess I will have to bear the expense and switch up to 7i afterall.  I have been using on my Palm only to have my contacts handy and there is extra costs for this too, as well as to be remote. Yikes.

Perhaps if i have to pay more now, I will be more diligent in keeping better records?....nahhh,

What do you think will happen to me using 6i after June 1? Will I never get a discount to switch later?  Is this purely a marketing close?   Will my data spontaneously combust?  Can i go on for years, saving my new info to EXPORT and switch later down the road?  I think that the monthly 29.95 discount is only for 1 yr. anyway. Then will go up to make up for the loss of this year to TP? I would only save $60 plus $60 as opposed to almost $800 for 7i + remote+palm.  Seems like a lot just to get tech support and be web based. i LIKE my "remoteness".

I suppose it's possible that that discount will evenually go away, but I haven't heard anything to that effect yet.

NO!

Yup!

No - you stay at that rate.

Remote is gong to be discontinued, as there has been very little call for it.

I have been a top producer user for years 6i. I have decided to go to active agent for outlook now that the system is going on to the web. I am not able to enhance and or optimise the master computer and the latest back up is 11/4/2007 I wanted to find someone to help me restore a back up I do have a slave computer that is working okay so I thougt to make another back up from that computer as well so that perhaps the slave's back up would be the one restored. I do know how to to re register the slave computer and check out a new data base. I also have a palm that will have to be restored. Does any one have written instructions on this or could send me to a tech support person I can pay for assistance? Susan@SusanCooney.com

Susan - You might try Greg Goulet at http://realsharp.com/  He used to resell TP. By the way, I am a reseller for many different CRM solutions, including Active Agent for Outlook, for which there is a discount if you go through me at http://garydavidhall.com/aaoutlook.htm
