After a few weeks of glitches in our points system, we have finally been able to repair most of the major glitches.  Points should now be working close to 100%.  There still is one minor issue that we are aware of and need your assistance in correcting.  It appears that if you go back and edit posts that have previously been published that the system is deducting points from your total.  We are working hard to correct this issue but need detailed examples to get this issue fully solved.  If you have an exact example please post in the comment section below in detail to assist our developers in correcting this issue.

The major loophole that was allowing some people to post more than 10 posts in a week and receive points for all posts has been closed.  It is now back to 10 posts per week, 10 comments per day with 200 points awarded for posts and an additional 25 points if you put it in a channel and 25 points per comment left.

One major change that has taken place is the schedule for posts. The posting week now starts at Monday at 12:00:00am and ends Sunday at 11:59:59pm.

If you are experiencing the glitch above please post in the comment section below.  Also, please do not flood this post with amount of points you have lost over the past few weeks.  Those comments will be deleted to keep this post as clean as possible for our developers to track the issue and resolve. If you did experience the loss of points, use the Contact ActiveRain at the bottom of this post.  Please be patient if you submit a ticket regarding lost points and condense your list to one ticket.  If multiple tickets are submitted it will slow down the response time for not only this issue but other crucial parts of the network.

Thanks to everyone for your patience during this time and continued great contributions to ActiveRain!

My last post there only shows 259 points. It should be 225 + 25 x 6 comments? I guess I cant remember how many points you get for comments but I believe there are 6 comments there. I have a feeling I lost hundreds if not thousands of points because I edit my posts so many times to get them to look right.

I haven't checked yet, but did you go back and find the posts that only received 200 points, and add the additional 25 that were missing?

5:14pm • #7

Shane- you do not get 25 points for every comment left on your posts.  if that was the case, I would have received over 19,000 points on my post with over 790 comments and jason crouch would have over 75,000 on his post with 3,000+ comments.  It is a complex algorithm that gives bonus points for comments left on a post.  I myself do not even know the equation.

Lisa- no, you had to send the post to a channel to get that 25 points.

I often go back in and re-edit my posts, for various reasons. I do not pay close enough attention to points to know if a few points fell out or not. I guess I will not be complaining, since I do not know. I think that your capping it at ten posts a week is good. Otherwise, someone can just post for the sake of posting and that does nothing but encourage marginal content.

I didn't know there was a problem going on, but I had been wondering why so many of my blogs had such low scores, but it was probably from all the editing of them... sorry that I don't have an exact example for the developers.

Carla- points are no longer awarded for linking to ActiveRain.

Brad- how did the Jason Crouch thing work?

Shane- I am not sure.  I haven't had over 10 posts to check on it.

I've gone back to edit posts. I didn't notice if points were being subtracted.

One other thing that I've noticed: sometimes one person will post the same content multiple times, say 10 or 15 times, each within minutes of the previous one. I don't know if they get points for it or not, but it is annoying to see the same post back to back for 10 or 15 iterations. It's hard to find other content.

Here are some examples of the editing problem and what I've been able to determine. These all happened multiple times, but it is inconsistent as to whether or not it occurs every time. I use the term "up to" because the number of deducted points was also inconsistent, but that's the most I ever lost for the specific editing function noted.

  1. When I just changed text under the WYSIWYG tab and submitted, up to 27 points were deducted.
  2. When I just changed text under the HTML tab and submitted, up to 64 points were deducted.
  3. When I clicked on edit and the WYSIWYG tab came up, switched to HTML tab, just added HTML coding, and submitted, up to 387 points were deducted.
  4. When I clicked on edit and the HTML tab came up, switched to WYSIWYG tab, and just added a picture, up to 213 points were deducted.
  5. When everything stayed the same and I just added tags, up to 109 points were deducted.
  6. When everything stayed the same and I just added groups, up to 49 points were deducted.

In most cases, the points deduction was instantaneous. Occasionally, it would show up only after I logged off and logged back on later.

I know all of those have occurred multiple times for three member profiles here, but the point deductions were different.

Thanks for looking into this, and if any of your developers would like me to experiment, have them give me a call. I answer the phones 24/7, and I still have lots of old posts to edit at the request of my attorney and because the formatting, videos, and/or pictures were stripped out of so many last November/December when the HTML requirements changed.

I'd be happy to play around and illustrate to see if the problem is still occurring.

All this is good to know. BUT what time zone are you using for the week deadline - PST or CST? Assume it's still CST.

Shane - yep you get some points for a post when you go over the max of 10 in a week but the points are pretty minimal from what I have seen.

I've done lots of editing but no way do I recall all nor am I inclined to try and figure it out.

Thanks for all you do and for fixing the glitches.

By the way, there appeared to be some sort of time limit on editing the most recent post. For example, I never had points deducted for editing the most recent blog entry, regardless of how old it was. However, as soon as I posted a new blog entry and went back and edited what is now the second most recent entry -- let's say to remove a typo or include a link that I left out or put in a picture -- points were deducted.

I actually sent an e-mail - twice - to AR about this very issue. The first time, Bob Stewart was able to rectify the problem for me. The scond time - in recent memory (last week as a matter of fact) I lost points unexpectedly after editing some of my market reports to add long tail keyword tags (I hope I got that last part right).  I hope that this problem is permanently fixed. Jeremy, I've noticed another change - that you seem to be capping points at 325 for a non featured post and 425 for a featured one, regarless of the number of comments.  I kinda liked it better without the caps, but I'm such a feakin' point hog!  But seriously, I think at least raising the caps gives a lot of the popular newbies a chance to work their way up - thereby more thoroughly addicting them!

FYI.

I just logged in and had 310,619 points.

I edited a very old post because Silvia Duke had commented on it, and I noticed that the last section in it had been duplicated and the pictures had been stripped out by last November's HTML change. I made it look reasonably good again, and then saved it.

Checked my points and still had 310,619 points.

I posted a blog entry and checked my points. It is down to 310,551 points, so I got 225 points for the entry but lost 293 points at the same time for editing that very old post.

Would y'all like me to continue editing my older posts that need editing and continue documenting the points loss until you have this cleared up. I can worry about getting the points back later if this will help you.

Added with edit: I just noticed that someone reblogged one of my posts. So although it shows that I got 25 points for that reblog, either I didn't, or the number of points that disappeared is 82 instead of 57.

I went to edit a post to get the HTML code for a new post and then decided against doing it right now in favor of the hot tub. However, I did get my 10 comments for points in. When I checked the score, it was 25 points short, so I went and made an 11th comment thinking that one of my comments was not long enough. I wrote a long paragraph but came back only to find that it didn't count. I checked the scoring detail and it has me for 10 comments for 25 points each, so I presume merely clicking on edit for a day-old post resulted in me losing 25 points.

When I logged off last night, I had 195,134 points. When I logged in just now, I have 195,021 points. This is another loss of points that I can't explain.

A few points here and a few points there might not seem like much, but they sure add up over the days.

Reminds me of a company that I once consulted for. We were allowed $35.00 for meals for each day. One day I turned in a bill for $35.05, and you would have thought that I had tried to rob the company blind. They didn't pay the extra nickel, which didn't really both me, of course, and as the HR manager explained it, "A nickel doesn't seem like much, but we bill meals to our Clients, and if we have 100 consultants each billing an extra nickel each day for seven days and 52 weeks, it adds up significantly, causing consternation to our Clients."

I think we members of ActiveRain are the Clients here, so I really do hope this problem gets fixed sooner rather than later.

Will y'all notify us when the problem has been fixed so that we can then add up all the missing points and request them? I really don't want to request points every week. Surely we all have better things to do.

Yikes!  It looks like none of my posts are going to get points this week?  Please help.

I've lost points when I;

  1. Went back to clean up the spaces between the photo and written word. It wouldn't let me change the margins.
  2. Took some blogs out of the Localism category, they didn't belong there.

Hope this can help the developers.

I just logged in and found my score had fallen from 204,674 to 204,544 since the last time I had been online last night at 10:00 Pacific Time. So by not doing anything yet today, I lost 130 points.

I was just locked out since 8:25am this morning! I could not post anything or make comments.  All other actions I could preform.  I have also not been able to insert graphics into my posts for a long time now.  I have tried to report it several times to the helpdesk (tickets: 56446 and 56419). I received the blackhole response and wasn't sure if I got through or not.  I see now I can make a comment (Yeah). I hope it is fixed. I will come back here if it is not fixed alright.  I am leaving the message with you in hopes that you will check out my account and see if you can help me out.  Thanks

I have a specific example! I edited this post http://activerain.com/blogsview/959751/are-you-trying-to-hold-back-niagara-falls- last night and lost points...not sure how many but when you're a newbie trying to build a presence you notice when a 5 becomes a 4! All I did was move the picture to remove white space in my blogroll and bold some text. That's it. I was at 23,5xx before editing and 23,4xx after. Thank you!

I edited this post

http://activerain.com/blogsview/1104027/walter-andersen-s-garden-nursery-garden-railroad

this morning at about 8:15 to delete one letter. Then I went out to show properties with a Client. I just logged in and my score went from 211,949 to 211,677, a loss of 272 points.

I edited my most recent post from yesterday

http://activerain.com/blogsview/1104489/camera-seller-review

to add an S to one word. I had "questions, question, questions." As soon as I re-submitted the post, I lost 29 points.

Whenever someone comments on a blog entry of mine, I always read the complete blog entry because it provides an opportunity to correct such typos that otherwise would be found by a prospective Client. In the field of home inspections, errors are not acceptable, so I don't consider them acceptable in my blog entries, either, since they can indicate to prospects a lack of attention to the detail that matters to them, and could cost them hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Any idea on when this problem will be solved? Updates rather than deafening silence?

I logged out this morning at 2:40 Pacific Time with 207,976 points. I just logged in to find 207,878 points, a loss of 98 points. I didn't do anything in the wee hours of the morning other than my ten comments.

Russel,

There are many things that can happen in the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately our scoring is tied to functions that can be undone (if that makes sense). For instance, you could have invited someone to ActiveRain and they could have erased a post. If they did that and you get 10% of all points they earn, then them erasing a post would have cost you 20 points (10% of their 200).

Someone could have deleted a post that you commented on. It could have even been a person that you invited. So if you invited someone, then commented on one of their posts and they erased it, you could lose 20 for them deleting the post and 25 because along with their post went your comment.

Someone could have deleted one of your comments. Someone you invited could have had some of their comments deleted. Someone you invited could have deleted some of their own comments. Someone could have gone back to one of your old posts and deleted their own comments which would have affected your post score.

The point is, there are more than a few ways to lose points in the wee hours of the morning.

Here's the deal.....whatever is or isn't happening, it is or isn't happening to everyone. I promise you that your account is not being singled out. So with that in mind and knowing that we have finite development resources, we have to focus on the things that are most important. While the points is certainly an integral part of the site, at the end of the day our focus is on helping our members make connections with buyers and sellers and helping them get more business.

I just gave you 3000 points. That should make up for every 98 or 24 or 31 or 12 point drop that you experience for the next 3 months.

Earlier today I edited an older post to remove an extraneous paragraph. That cost me 48 points so there are still problems. Should I ask for all these points back, will you give them back when the problem is fixed, or are they simply gone forever?

OK, thank you.  Glad you clarified all of this for us.  I'm glad I didn't go back and edit too many times.  I'm sure that I went back and edited probably the last 6 blogs that I wrote at least once.

While I appreciate the return of 3,000 points, I'm actually more interested in cleaning up my old posts from when ActiveRain stripped formatting and videos out of them last December with the change in HTML coding. Additionally, I really don't think points should be taken away for editing, and just so you'll know, I edited a July 4th post and lost 129 points. It's so obvious that this is not related to someone deleting my comments, Invitees deleting their blog entries, etc.. It's an ongoing problem with editing posts.

I have sent an email about my issue - but will post here too if it is helpful.  I edited many of my blogs to add Outside Blog which I just set up yesterday.  I seem to have lost over 1,750 point over the last hour of editing older posts.  Please let me know if you need additional information.

I've gone back to edit posts to make corrections and fix links that have changed.  The SNEAKER that is getting me is that the AR Blog editor itself is rearranging the code in a different way than it was when some of those older posts were published.  This can make post corrections a very onerous and unwelcome task.  John

It appears to me that we need to make sure we are using the spell checker before we post, or we will loose points.  I think I probably have lost posts because of adding a slide show in the HTML section but I always post a regular blog then go back in to add the slide.  I think I will not do this anymore...

Is it possible to lose points for updating my profile? It seems I had a little over 1,400 and now I have a little over a 1,000. I changed the title of the About Me section, added another testimonial and changed my Twitter link.

I fixed a link in my Dad's profile and saw his point total drop 400 points. That was a couple of weeks ago. He went from being second place and featured in his area to third place. We've worked him back up to second place and featured but I know even he was wondering where his points went :-)

Hi guys,

Just a note to let you know that I did not get my 100 points for logging in today.  I worked until late last night posting.  I don't know when the clock begins and stops on the logging in thing.  But maybe you can check it out for me.  Thanks.
