Just a little RANT of my own...after reading my broker's this one is a cake-walk!

Well, I read my broker's "Rant for the day", and I must say that it is pretty hard to compete with something like that.  But, I do have a couple of points to get across pertaining to this time of year, if anyone is interested in listening or if it might pertain to your situation.

First of all, we are now in the first month of the 6 month extensions for 2008 tax returns.  I am asked, repeatedly, "why will I have to pay penalty and interest if I have you file an extension for me?"  Here is the answer:  If you OWE taxes on your 2008 return, filing an extension DOES NOT EXTEND the time to PAY.  It only extends the time to file the return "itself".  It is possible to do an estimate of the taxes due and send it in by the 15th of April.  But, of course, that date is passed.  So, if nothing but 0's was on the extension form there will be penalty and interest.  Period.

Secondly, a few weeks ago I happened to read a comment by an agent regarding two young buyers that were thinking about getting married this year and purchasing a home.  This comment is in reference to what their tax preparer told them they shoud do.  Now, please don't get me wrong on this.  I am not casting blame on anyone and I am surely not saying anything bad about their tax preparer.  Educating one's self is the key here.  Anyway, the preparer told this couple to wait until next year to get married so they could each take the first time home-buyer credit (up to $8000).  This will work ONLY if they buy two different properties and each one lives in their prospective property.  If they will be purchasing only one property but reside in that property as two "single" people, they can each only claim half of the credit.  It is the same as two married people filing separately.  If you have any questions regarding this, please send me a separate email and I will be glad to expain further.

End of MY Rant

Randi...does that mean if I bring you my 2006 and 2007 info to file that I will have to pay a penalty. ;-)

Vern,
Not necessarily.  It all depends on what your taxable income is, if any, or whether you have additional tax to pay (i.e., self-employment, IRA penalties, etc.)  If you worked part-time at another job where they took out Federal withholding it might have been enough to wipe out any tax due.  Not everyone has the same tax situations.  This is why many tax returns can get very involved or end up being very complicated.

Randi - Our son bought a home with two other friends.  Our son owns half, the other two people own the other half.  We told them they could take $4k per half.  When his friend had his taxes done the preparer told him he could take $8k himself ... for a 25% interest!  We told our son to apply for his $4k and tell his friend what he did.  With that advice they could have taken $24k total, or $32k if you took $8k per 25%.  It is ridiculous.  Haven't heard how it worked out.  Thanks for your information.

Evelyn - Thankyou.  I try to be.  I have been doing taxes since 1988 and I feel like I have read TONS of information.

Jim - You definitely did the right thing with your son.  If the IRS catches the mistake before they give the credit to his friends, it will be taken care of immediately.  If not, they may get a rude awakening when the chips finally fall.

Tom - I don't know if I would go quite that far.  After all, we are supposed to be a civilized country.  But I will say that whoever the preparer is they definitely need more education concerning taxes.

Randi...I agree with Tom...It would cut down on stupidity and make a person pay more attention.  Sounds like the preparer above was just trying to drum up some business!
