There are different levels and types of social interaction. If you are in business, you have some idea of the personna you want to project, depending upon how you want to be perceived. In real life, your personality is somewhat compartmentalized- you don't wear a swim suit and bring a six-pack in to work, I don't care how casual your Fridays are, although it's behavior you would feel comfortable with outside of the work environment.

And these different ways of presenting yourself transfer to the social media etherscape. In some arenas you are more formal; in others, you take your virtual shoes off and put your feet on the coffee table.

So why not create structures within your social media landscape for doing just this? These social media microcultures can fill the need you have for relating within smaller subsets of your life- but better than this: you will be creating little worlds to fill other peoples' needs as well.

IDENTIFY YOUR PURPOSE

This is a site that I put together for our group The TwitterQueens. This represents a large subgroup in my life, as it combines business, education and friendship, and I feel like that may be the case for most of the other members. If the truth be told, I just got it up and running, and the members of the group add content in the form of photos, videos, social media and personal blogs, and events for the calendar. It takes some maintenance, but it's not anything that is difficult to do.

I went to ning, and signed up for a free site. No coding required; it is as easy as choosing what types of interaction you want to add to your site. From the page manager site, you can add photos, notes, birthdays, video, a blog feature that all members can add to- check out our site and see what you can do.

LESS INTERACTIVE

If you are interested in something less complex but that still creates connections, consider using Crowdvine. I first saw that used prior to RE Tech South, and it was a nice way to connect with those coming to the event prior to actually arriving- in fact, the creators of the site say that once people meet online, "...it's our job to get out of the way." There is a no-cost option for setting this up as well.

AND IT DOESN'T GET ANY EASIER THAN

...building a Facebook fan page. If you haven't signed up with Facebook, you will have to do that, and build a profile. Then you need to determine your focus- business? educational? a personal interest? Having decided that, click here to begin building your page. People can sign up, post to you, and RSVP to events you plan.

It has never been easier to find like-minded people to share with- whether it be real estate agents sharing leads and tips, vacationers writing reviews of vacation spots, parents supporting each other through the joys and trials of raising children, or singles trying to meet people that they have something in common with. The choice is yours. Decide your focus, and create a social media network of your own.

@HeyAmaretto - love this post and the idea of a social media microculture. Sorta tribe-like, sorta not. Generated some interesting thoughts for the future.

And you are near my old stomping grounds - Littleton, Bolton, Stow and then in Somerville and Cambridge.

Jeff, Paulia, Debi- TwitterQueens started out as a cute idea, but the great thing about it is that it has morphed into kind of an online "trusted advisor". The membership is what is key for this group- many are well-versed in social media, and have been very sharing with the other group members. Our blog reads like a reference book channeling Erma Bombeck- we have posts about SEO, motherhood, creating an avatar for twitter that "pops"- and the members request of each other what other information should be made available.

To me, that's the magic of these things. First of all, the more minds you get in one spot, the more ideas will be generated- for better or worse! Just toss 3 or 4 smart people together at a bar, sit back, and watch the evolution of their ideas; that's nearly what this is like. No one person can script it- you can facilitate and moderate.

Jeremy, Jason- I think you are right. twitter isn't the small clubhouse that it used to be, and it certainly isn't private. The agenda is- there is no agenda. People have a tendency to want to sort, then deepen, any relationships that begin. That explains why tweet-ups proliferate, but face-to-face isn't possible if your friends are around the world.

Social media microcultures allow people the added depth to explore friendships and extend business relationships.

Hey, Jeff. I grew up in Bolton, right down the street from Nashoba Regional. Absolutely beautiful country, although winters could last 2 months instead of the 4-5 that we are given and I'd be happy.

Diane, you hit this one out of the park! First, congrats on the Featured Post! Second, you are so welcoming to anyone and everyone on #twitterqueens, that I immediately felt at home when I joined. You are an inspiration, and I am proud to "know" you! (Her handle is @HeyAmaretto BTW -- you need to follow her & the other #twitterqueens, like myself, @realtormarney ). Thanks for creating this great community!

Christina- Yes, the event in NYC will be more than a tweetup- it will be a Social Media camp, with extras. If you come in the night before, we are even arranging networking over an off Broadway production of Girls Night. But there are also many many tweetups arranged by TwitterQueens- smaller networking events where people can meet face to face- that are listed on our page, and I have more to add. These connections are amazing! How can it not benefit a person, both personally and professionally?

Imagine starting a  network for the purpose of, say, Real Estate referrals. You go to ning, set it up, populate it with a group of Realtors/agents from around the country. You see each other's families in the pictures; you read each other's blogs; you get a sense of their business intelligence through interaction. This core group is reminded to invite other trusted members. EVEN if you never gained a referral- which I doubt would happen- you have established yourself as someone who can put together a community, and pick up other people's ideas.

Charlie, I ADORE the fact that you can find so many things for free on the net. Kudos to the creators of ning for creating something so in depth that it doesn't take a lot of time or knowledge to set up. You just need to define your sense of purpose. But I think it is a little like writing a blog post too- you can plan, and it takes on a larger life.

Bettina, Chris- I am reminded of something that I read about the piano- that it is both the simplest and the most complicated instrument there is. The great thing about the Internet is that you can stand on the shoulders of giants- and you can't do that to play the piano! Use the programs that are already in place for you. It is a commitment of time, but it might be sensible to look at what type of prospecting isn't giving you the best ROI, and substitute in an online approach for a trial period.

Hi Patricia- I hope that it is truly worthwhile information!

Clint, I should have KNOWN that you had posted that Cat In Heat cartoon. Glad you are one of our gender-diversified #twitterqueens! Thanks, and MWAAH back atcha!

Great Post! I love the Twitterqueens! You all keep me laughing -- and I feel like I know each one of you! It is very cool to watch all of the relationships develop into friendships. For those who are SM naysayers -- they just need to observe the culture and trusted relationships you have produced via SM and they will have to bite their tongue;) -- Continue the great work!

Gender diversified....love that term :)  I love Twitterqueens tag line...and so now that it is evolving, and not everyone is from AR (thank gawd for diversity) nor are they all REALTORS...is the goal still the same?  Do you remember AR when it was a relatively small group....now it is too large to manage effectively and we  never even see even 1/100th of all the posts.

Diane: Nice post... I agree with the microcultures idea... It goes hand in hand with hyperlocal. The TwitterQueens site is great. I love mixing up the biz with a little humor.

Thanks...

Brenda, Krisstina- Yes, I think we will see more of these developing as twitter and other places lose that "neighborhood" flavor. Humor- and a sense of being empowered by it, I think- probably help to define the TwitterQueens group. If I were to describe the average person in the group, it would be a woman close to middle age who has probably not had it all that easy. But this person is a survivor, has a keen and irreverent sense of humor, is giving as well as demanding. How could you set out to find a group like that? You provide the structure, and the group is attracted. And you are right,  Krisstina- these acquaintances have become friendships- and how sad if this medium had never existed!

René- you are right- there is a hyperlocal flavor but without the variable of locality. Maybe hypercommonality?

Hmmm. The idea has lots of potential..but I'm afraid it's gonna take me some time to get all wrapped up in it. Oh wait...is that a summer vacation I see coming in the distance? Maybe I can get it by the end of June, or July.

Gary- Exactly. The community can be set up by addition- in which case you define the things that will attract, say, your ideal client, supply those things, and see who comes.

William, if you have one free evening and a list of 10-15 core people who match the profile of your target community, you can start. When you invite those 10, ask each of them to invite 5 more.

Great post Diane!  There's something for all of us to utilize wether or not we form a social media microculture or just pass the information on to a friend or associate who's looking to do the same or something similar.

Appreciate you #TwitterQueens and you ladies that may read this comment if you get down so far on the list think about joining them ladies.  They are vibrant, fun, networkers, they share valuable information as well as being very supportive to one another and conversationalists to all.  No I'm definitely not one of them, but will continue promoting them since they have a great thing going including their upcoming NYC event. http://twitterqueensnyc.eventbrite.com/ * Note:  This isn't self promotion, but an upaid and unsolicited plug which would be of value to any lady who became a #TwitterQueen and was able to attend.

With the #TwitterQueens microculture including not only the sites listed, but also linked in you won't want to miss out.

Diane, very interesting post and comments. I had no idea of twitterqueens - does it help sort out how to manage twitter? Which I find overwhelming with the 'small' number only 200+ of people I follow. Tweetdeck helps. Any suggestions?

Hi Sharon- I saw that you went over to TwitterQueens and signed up. Welcome! Many people use TweetDeck. With TweetDeck, I forund that I could follow some groups I chose better, but couldn't interact with my entire group as well, and I missed that. Some other people use Seesmic Desktop (http://desktop.seesmic.com/) which is set up similarly to TweetDeck but also intergrates some ability to post to Facebook.

I really like TwitZap. I was thrilled when I found it, because I always liked the setup of the regular twitter site. This is how it looks:

This is what my TwitZap page looks like. TZ is not based on your computer so it doesn't slow down because of API issues. And you can set up channels based on people you like to follow, as well as groups and searches (see a few I have on the right side of my conversations- you can see a couple of individuals and I have the twitterqueens there too, so I can jump into the conersation if it is going on).

Feel free to email me with any questions or if I can help you with something specific: dianeg.realestate@yahoo.com . I think the thing is to find something that feels pretty comfortable, and stick with it until you are really used to it.
