Olathe and It's History

My office is in Olathe, Kansas.  Now some may wonder where Olathe, Kansas is.  Well it is in the northeast corner of Kansas, near Kansas City.  There are some interesting facts about Olathe many people don't know.  I certainly didn't know some of them until a few days ago.

1.Did you know the first cowboy boots were invented in Olathe?  That's right...right here in Olathe, Kansas.  They were invented in 1875 by a first generation American of German descent named Charles Hyer.  I had been in Hyer boot, but had no idea this company made the first boots!  Hyer Boot Company became one of the most successful post-Civil War businesses.

2.The football huddle...I as a non-sport fan person always thought it was kinda crazy..a bunch of guys standing in a circle with their arms around one another!!!  A football huddle!!  Little did I know, that too was originated in Olathe, Kansas! It was originated by the coach and a student at the Kansas School for the Deaf ( today it is still an important part of our community) as a way of preventing the defense from reading the lips and sign language of the offensive team!  Now I can understand the why of a huddle!

3.Olathe played a vital role in the expansion of the west.  I know you've all heard of the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails.  Well...they all converged right here in Olathe, Kansas!  Lone Elm Campground in Lone Elm Park marks the site where thousands of travelers stayed on their journeys west.  Another historic place is the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm.

4.The city name Olathe (O-lay'-tha), which was founded in 1857, comes from the Shawnee Indian word which means "beautiful"  and Olathe is beautiful.

So if anyone is moving to this area of Kansas, it is a great place to live.   Hills, trees, nearby lakes, history, and lots of friendly people...and I can't leave out affordable housing!!
