FIGHTING SIOUX, Political Correctness Defeats a Proud Warrior!

Sioux

It's a sad day here in North Dakota. Our most noted Proud Warrior has had his butt kicked by the whiny wimps of political correctness. Since his birth in the 1930's all of North Dakota (and Minnesota communities near Grand Forks ND) have cheered on this distinguished warrior. For 60 years thousands of North Dakota kids hoped to be on his team.

Yesterday the spineless wimps of political correctness on the North Dakota Board of Education decided that this proud warrior had to die. Years of tradition died. A wonderful opportunity to explain to our children who this people, the Sioux, are and the part they played in our North Dakota history... died. An opportunity to bestow honor on an admirable people... gone.

So the question remains, what would the spineless wimps on the North Dakota Board of Education have us rename this icon of North Dakota? If we leave it up to the spineless wimps on the North Dakota Board of Education perhaps we will be cheering on The Non-Combative Indigenous Prairie Dwellers of North Dakota.

My condolences.  This has been happening all over the country, as beloved team mascots and team names fall to political correctness.  I'm with you - it's a blown opportunity to share with a new generation the history of our area, of the place of indians in our nation's history.  Of course there are exceptions, such as Florida State Seminoles, who apparently have the blessing of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.  I live in Washington Redskin territory, and it's probably a matter of time 'til that gets changed.

We saw a similar thing with our San Diego State University team a few years ago--although the commentary on that happening was not as well-written as your blog post!

This really irritates me.  I just got a Fighting Sioux Hockey Sweatshirt last time I was out there.  Maybe it's time to get rid of the reservations... it offends me that they're allowed to have one when my ancestors don't :)

Anyway, where is Ralph Englestad when UND needs him?  If I'm not mistaken they tried to remove the Fighting Sioux name once before and he threatened to quit funding the new Ice Arena..

As a proud fan of the Florida State Seminoles, I am disgusted that yet another great name has been swept under by PC.  It is a miracle each year that our Seminole (not usually a real one, you note) rides onto the field on Renegade and plants his flaming torch... as Margaret said, we've only lasted this long because the tribe has approved it.  Condolences to ND!

I really think that move is over the top.  I would love to hear from those withSioux ancestry as to why this would be offensive.  I completely understand and agree with the word "Indians", but do not get this one.  Personally I think it puts their history in people's minds, so I see it as a positive, but I am not Sioux.

Margaret, Melisa, Shoshana, & Tim, Amen to all of your comments.

Daniel, unfortunately Ralph passed on a few years ago. For the benefit of those who are unfamiliar with Ralph E. he gave millions to UND and in particular to the hockey program. He gave several million just to build a fantastic hockey arena and it was spelled out in no uncertain terms that the Proud Warrior must be a large part of the arena's interior design. To make a long story short Ralph is dead and his wishes are being walked all over, again in the name of political correctness.

Terry, the whole thing has been crazy as the Sioux Warrior has only been presented as a proud warrior, never a comical cartoon character.

Tim said "I would love to hear from those with Sioux ancestry as to why this would be offensive." A recent survey of the Sioux people showed overwhelming support for the Warrior but as usual the spineless politicians caved to the very few angry agitators who want their 15 minutes of fame. To bad their very self centered attitudes will cost generations of people to not know anything about the Sioux ancestry other then they were a Indian nation defeated and put on a reservation by evil white Europeans.
