The following photo was taken at the Beartooth Nature Center (a native wildlife refuge at the North Entrance to Red Lodge, Montana) on May 3, 2009.
The caretaker went in the cage where the bears (BlueBeary, Bo, Buster and Winnie) live and shortly after, I heard a loud "Ouch". The next thing I heard was the caretaker talking to Bluebeary and saying "Don't Bite!". I was surprised that the caretaker went into the cage in the first place and even more surprised that he was standing right next to a bear that just bit him. This explains why there is at least 4 feet separating the side of the cage from the fence behind which the visitors can watch the bears. Luckily, the caretaker was OK and after talking to Bluebeary, he slowly walked backwards and exited the cage.
In a future post, I will present some of the other residents of the Beartooth Nature Center. The Nature Center offers visitors a great opportunity to learn about wild animals by observing them at close range. Make sure you do not intentionally provoke the animals by getting too close to their cage and always stay behind the fenced area (they are there for a reason).
