Furry Friday - Be Careful, BlueBEARy Can Bite

By
Education & Training

The following photo was taken at the Beartooth Nature Center (a native wildlife refuge at the North Entrance to Red Lodge, Montana) on May 3, 2009.

Bluebeary at the Beartooth Nature Center in Red Lodge Montana

The caretaker went in the cage where the bears (BlueBeary, Bo, Buster and Winnie) live and shortly after, I heard a loud "Ouch".   The next thing I heard was the caretaker talking to Bluebeary and saying "Don't Bite!".  I was surprised that the caretaker went into the cage in the first place and even more surprised that he was standing right next to a bear that just bit him.  This explains why there is at least 4 feet separating the side of the cage from the fence behind which the visitors can watch the bears.   Luckily, the caretaker was OK and after talking to Bluebeary, he slowly walked backwards and exited the cage.

In a future post, I will present some of the other residents of the Beartooth Nature Center.   The Nature Center offers visitors a great opportunity to learn about wild animals by observing them at close range.  Make sure you do not intentionally provoke the animals by getting too close to their cage and always stay behind the fenced area (they are there for a reason).

HAHAHA! Gerry!  It looks like Bluebeary is really listening to his scolding! Awesome animals...the trainer knew not to turn his back, though!

Sheldon,

Thanks.  I believe he BEARly escaped with all his fingers.   LOL

Mary,

Bluebeary is a berry intelligent bear.   I bet you he is a quick learner and won't pull that again on his trainer.

Hi Gerry!
"Don't Bite"???? Wow!  All I can think of is the guy and his girlfriend who became dinner to the bears they loved and the other guy who is making "pets" out of the bears who live around him!  Anyway, bless the people who take care of these animals safely!

LOL. Wow. He treats the bear the same as a pet dog. No no. Don't bite! I guess they have to keep it well fed =/

Paula,

Bless the people who take care of these animals safely.  You said it well.

Lisa,

They take great care of the animals and feed them regularly.   I guess they always make sure they are happy and not hungry when they do have to enter the animals enclosed living spaces.

Sharon,

They better listen to the hand that feeds them.

Debi,

It takes nerves of steel to do the job that he does.   I believe the animals have grown accustomed to him since they were young or from the first day they were brought to the Center.
