Here's a incident that happened to a couple agents in my office this week: After a successful closing, the agents drove to the vacant house to take the lockbox off and make sure everything was prepared for the new owners. The Sellers were following them to check the mailbox one last time. The two agents noticed a car in the driveway as they drove up, but continued to back their truck up to the house. The truck was quickly surrounded by 2 men who ordered them into the house, where they were severely beaten. Their keys, wallets and cell phones were taken, and the men quickly left. As soon as they were gone, the agents ran to lock the doors and began to check all of the rooms, where they found a woman tied up with a towel stuffed in her mouth.
The Sellers fortunately arrived in the driveway at this time, and were able to call for help. While both agents were hospitalized, they are expected to recover.
I wrote several weeks ago about the increase in crime we are experiencing in our normally quiet neighborhoods, and am shocked to hear about this event.
- Be aware of your surroundings when you approach a vacant property!
- If there is a car in the driveway that isn't supposed to be there - Leave!
- Tell a friend or a colleague where you are going - have them call you if you haven't reported in.
Stay safe!
