May is the time of year when the streets of San Diego become awash in the color purple.
Along with the many Lily of the Nile plants that are blooming, as well as the sea lavender and the pride of Madeira (I'll have posts on those later), the Jacaranda is also nearing full bloom.
If you've never seen a tree covered in a mass of purple, you've never seen a Jacaranda.
My wise old grandmother loved all things purple. Unfortunately, she never got to see Lily of the Nile or a sea lavender or a Jacaranda in all its royal purple glory.

Although Jacaranda mimosifolia is considered a blue tree (just like an orange cat is actually called a red cat -- color blind people -- sheesh), it's purple, purple, purple.

The Jacaranda is a subtropical tree native to South America, but it is cultivated throughout the world where frost is not a problem. It has become naturalized in Miami and Hawaii but also grows quite well in California north to Oakland and southern Texas, although I was born and raised in southern Texas and never saw one. Interestingly, it is considered an species in South Africa and Queensland, Australia, because it crowds out native species. However, Pretoria, South Africa, is also known as Jacaranda City.

For the most spectacular displays of Jacarandas, visit:
-
Ash Street in downtown San Diego. Enter on the east side at 163 and proceed all the way to the harbor.
-
Greenview Place and Country Club Place in Spring Valley (map code 1271-A4).

I love these trees. It is a little too hot for them here but there are some!
