32 Comments on Taxes and Orgasm
Jon, I have never run into a supporter of state income taxes anywhere.
One of the main reasons people move to Nevada after retiring is because of No State Income Tax. It would just kill our growth and accompanying economy.
Asphyxiation by taxation is too harsh. How about 5 years in the electric chair?
I don't want more taxes. I want the government to do a better job of serving me with the money they already collect.
Jon - I think a lot of people out there support others paying more taxes. We don't need to raise taxes, at almost any level. What needs to be accomplished is a check in spending. To tax some people more because it is "fair" is the most abusive form of tax there is, followed closely by taxes to impose lifestyle and cultural changes.
Tchaka is correct. It's all relative. Florida might not have an income tax but they will tax you in other ways. I've had a few clients sell their NYC homes and move to Florida beacause of "NO" income taxes. They've all since returned and bought new places here. Their only savings was not having to buy winter clothes.
What counts is the over all tax burden as a portion of income regardless of how it is taxed. My clients have all returned to NYC because salaries in Manhattan are much higher than Florida. NYC has an income tax but salaries are 3x the national average. Our property values are the highest in the country but our property taxes are among the lowest in the country.
Would you rather make $40,000/year with no income tax or $150,000 year and pay maximum 4% - 6%? It's all relative.
I've been burned by Tchaka's arguement in the past and will NEVER again vote for special levies for education, public services and the like because it's a landsclide once you enact those taxes. Let the school year be cut. Make the abusers of the original funds they are given accept accountability for the poor allocation of the money. They don't need more $$, just more accountability.
I would love to comment on the rest of your post, but y'all are so conservative over here I wouldn't want to frighten anyone :))
Tchaka - There should be a reason you do not disclose the State you came from, as if you do, Floridians may just flock to it. It is so good, that it can't exist (LOL)
Getting on a more serious note, you are asking big questions. I started writing the response and it is getting longer and longer that I finally decided to make a small part of it a separate blog.
Matt - and I had high hopes to hook you with a big "T"
Virginia - 5 years in electric chair but only if they are fed organic food before tirning the power. you gotta be kinder, lady...
Maria - I hate to tell you that you are not unique. For some unknown reason many others don't want to raise taxes as well. What is wrong with us?
Jon, I did not realize that you were such a softie. I suppose you would have a big screen TV in front of them with pizza delivered.
Mike - true. And if we keep doing it, it is like robbery. Taking something from the victimbecause he has it. Not because it is fair, or anything, simply because the victim has it.
making it beneficial to by under $200K in earning is a disaster. Because people do not go from $50K to $1 million. They have to go through a $250K stage, and they may now not want it. So they will never go to $1 Mil. That's where we will suffer, not at $200K.
Not understanding it is surprising, given that already, even before we got to this point, $13 Trillion has already voted and left the country. How many will follow?
Mitch - Itis not that Tchaka is right, it is something wrong with your clients, if they are still working, to sell their NYC homes and move to Florida. Those who move and who are smart, do not need to work.
So, their income is the same, no matter where they are. Of course, being here is nicer than in New York most of the time.
Of course it is all relative. Like our basic needs include shelter, but nobody said that it should be in the form of $600,000 villa in a gated community. Our basic needs include food, but nobody said that it should be organic. Our basic needs include clothes, but not necessarily from Versace or Dior. it is all relative.
By the way, forget $150,000 in New York City. If you make the same $40,000 there, like very many people do, you pay 6.85% State Income Tax plus you pay $1,245.14 in City of New York tax, which at $40K income will be 3.11%. So, you State and City income tax cost you already 9.96%. Make it 10% for simplicity.
Mitch, tell me how easy it is to live in New York City on $40K income? Can you survive on that income in New York City? And you can survive on this money in Florida. And if you do not have to pay State and City tax, that money would be enough to pay a property tax on a $200,000 home or condo.
So, it is really relative.
By the way, if your clients only pay 4-6%, be quiet about it. IRS will come and get them. And will put them in electric chair for 5 years at the request of Virginia Hepp
Jennifer - and right you are. Because it all boils to confusion of terms. Shortening of days in school is not worse education. Less police does not automatically mean more crime. My son just came from Germany, said he never saw highway police there. But there are cameras everywhere, and they write tickets based on what they see.
And come on, bring it all. We will yell and scream but will leave you only half dead. Tchaka says it is OK to be half dead, would you want to try?
Virginia - it is not softie, it is being progressive, that's the buzz word today. I am against waterboarding because they did not use purified and filtered water. How could they do it? It is so un-American
It's getting really scary when people want to pay more in taxes in order to be happier. I'm still wondering why ActiveRain would feature such a post. Does it reflect their views?
Jon, The IRS doesn't collect state income tax. The 4-6% I meant state tax. OK so lets say 10%. These were not retiree's they were in their 30's. with careers and wanted to continue their careers. I suppose they wanted more than to just survive.
One of the clients that I was referring to is an advertising executive in his 30's who thought Miami was as cosmopolitan as New York. He spent 6 months at University of Miami to learn to speak Spanish apparently a prerequisite for jobs there. When he 1st left NY he was making $150K. They don't pay comparable salaries in Miami. Now he is making much more because he got an even bigger job. So another 10% to many is well worth it. I also was referring to Manhattan (New York County) not the other boroughs/counties of NYC. BTW, he still owns the Miami condo.
Tim - I am not sure why. It caused a fascinating discussion, I picked a few great Members who I never read before, and a few of those that are willing to sell their soul and have not noticed that they have done it long ago already.
Mitch - As I said, in the 30s they will be better off in NY. Then, if you really want to move, you usually lose at the beginning, but catch up later.
i met people in South Florida who were making way more than $150K a year.
As for owning a condo in Miami, it may not be easy to sell now for top dollar. We here in Daytona now can find a 2/2 in direct oceanfront 21-story building a 1,200 sf unit for even under $150K, and I remember then 4 years ago for $400K.
We're seeing the disasterous results of taxes too low to pay for wars and basic government. If we'd had a sensible tax policy for the 8 years of Bush, we'd be in a lot better shape.
Ann - Why not get back a bit further, to 1991. At this time nobody wanted old Bush to go in, so they stopped and then left. They were there, but Americans did not want to go in. If they, however, did what was needed, and removed Saddam at that time, there would be no second war and there wold be no need for money for that.
And also it may be a bad news for you, but there is no tax that can offset what Obama has already spent. It is not my words, you can check if for yourself. So, how about 120 days of Obama stacked against 8 years of Bush?
As for me, we were in much better shape.
