A shariah-approved mortgage

I read an article about a shariah-approved mortgage for Muslims. I had never heard that charging interest was against their religion, though I do know that the Bible has rules against it - to my knowledge there is no Bible based religion following that particular counsel.

This article was based in Canada. Is there such a program or concern here in the US?
