Dog Gone Wild

T.J.
Meet my 4-year-old. His name is T.J.
T.J. is a miniature dachshund.

Meet T.J. Newest playmate ... name and age are unknown.

Pew

You all know what happens when your child decides he just has to play with the new kid. Yep, you got it ... S-K-U-N-K-E-D!!!

I swear to you, it wasn't pretty.
It just so happened that I had recently stumbled on a recipe for just this sort of thing and decided to hold on to it. Truth be told I figured I would have to give it to my son to use on my grandson who insists he just has to meet the wildlife... all the wildlife.

I was surprised, but this really worked.

Ingredients:
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
¼ cup baking soda
1 teaspoon of salt

Preparation:
Dissolve the baking powder in the peroxide. Add the soap, mix thoroughly and pour in a spray bottle.

Apply solution to your pets fur avoiding eyes and mouth. Wait 15 minutes and rinse completely. They claim one application will do the trick, but I bathed him twice. They claim this mixture works on people as well. It must be true since there is no odor on my hands and I of course was the one who had to rescue the silly dog from his playmate.

Hi Eric
I've been told the same. This was cheaper and I didn't have enough tomato juice on hand. These other ingredients happen to be on hand, so I figure I'd give it a try. Worked well.

Hi Suesan, I had also heard that the tomato juice works, but hadn't heard about this one.  Thanks for sharing the tip.

Suesan I had a beagle/spaniel mix when I was a kid----its favorite thing was to drag a dead skunk to the door step.  That poor dog spent most of its life "unapproachable."

Hi Gary, I've been told that tomato juice works. As I told Eric, I just didn't have much on hand. Besides, I wanted to try this recipe.

Charles, sounds like your dog was just as determined as mine. Wonder what happened to their keen sense of smell?

Jen, good to know, thanks! My big oaf has played with a skunk only once. He was not happy with the outcome. I hope he learned his lesson. Took me gallons of juice, and he has that water resistant fur. Good thing it was in the summer and we could do it outside. 95 pounds of stinking furball is rough. Glad you got your little guy back to normal! Thanks for the good tip. I would have to just pour it on the big boy though, if I sprayed it would just sit on the outside of his fur.

Have a great evening!

I hope I don't have to go back and find this recipe.  Since I don't have a dog, it probably won't happen.  The cat has more sense.  LOL

Hi Suesan - I am going to keep your skunk remedy recipe handy. Thankfully my dogs have not "played" with a skunk yet but they are in our area and knowing my dogs it is just a matter of time.

Andrea,
In your case I would mix it by the gallons and pour it into a tub. Preferably out in a barn ... that's way too much doggie to be stinky. I would also suggest a mask and gloves ... LOL

Libby, you are so right. If this hadn't work he was going right to the groomer ... over night. He smelled so bad! Thanks for commenting.

Hi Barbara,
You are so right ... Cats are way too smart and fast to get skunked.

Hey Dan,
I would hold on to it. Where there's a skunk and a dog you never know. Better safe than sorry.

That looks like Sammy the Skunk. He used to live near me and come by every night around midnight. I've been wondering where he moved to. Glad he has a nice home by you now. Tell T.J. that Sammy's okay.

We have a skunk that comes to visit us occasionally. I like to sleep with the window open except when the skunk comes to visit.
