Turning written documents or similar files into PDFs is common these days. When you scan documents this is often the result, although scanning technology sometimes creates Tif files.

But, what about the other direction?

Haven't you sometimes had a PDF file that you would like to be able to edit? While there is some software from Adobe that allows this (Adobe Professional, which is not inexpensive, and there are issues with this), why not use a conversion tool that is FREE.

PDF to Word logo and link to site

PDF to Word is a FREE on-line application that will convert your PDFs to word documents. I just tried it with a couple of PDF files I had and it was great. I expect there are some PDFs that will not lend themselves to conversion to a Word do (especially ones that include charts and graphs), but what the heck - this is FREE, and you don't have to download it to your PC or laptop.

All you do is:

  • go to PDF to Word
  • browse for the PDF file you want to convert
  • provide an email for where the file should be sent

The application will upload the file to be converted (don't close the window during that process) then send you an email with the converted file.

It occurred to me that sometimes a writer converts a file to a PDF so it cannot be easily altered by recipients. This could be a potential issue. I'm not sure if there is a way to prevent your PDF from being converted - there may be.

The other issue is file size - the one large PDF I converted was 388KB, but converted to a word file of 1039 KB. But apart from this I see tremendous utility to this free PDF to Word converter.

I have to give credit where credit is due, since I learned about this from Mr. Internet himself, Michael Russer on his weekly tips email. Here is the original story about PDF to Word (PDF = Particularly Difficult Format). I suggest subscribing to his blog - lots of useful tidbits.

Check it out. It might come in handy.

I've not seen a "reverse" converter from PDF to WORD, thanks for sharing.  I image the PDF file must have intelligence as opposed to a scanned PDF file.  The latter would require OCR.
