Old Worthington is applying to be on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. Again.
This Week Community News has the story, Old Worthington applies to join list of national historic districts. According to the newspaper article written by This Week News staff writer, Candy Brooks a 1999 effort to get Old Worthington on the list was denied because structures already on the list were included in the application.
Most people are surprised that Old Worthington is not a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
According to the newspaper article: "The National Register is administered by the National Parks Services. Nationwide, there are 13,594 historic districts, including 33 in Franklin County. Worthington's Rush Creek Village is on the list, which is called on the National Register Web site "the official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation."
Today's Old Worthington neighborhood is the neighborhood that was originally the Village of Worthington, established in 1803 stretching from Morning to Evening Streets (east to west) and and North Street to South Street. Buildings which will not be included in the historic district application are too new or were renovated incorrectly.
Old Worthington could be on the National Register of Historic Districts by the end of the year.
