Color me Green- The In's and Out's of Low VOCs Paints

Certain types of paints, stains, and wood finishes can emit harmful chemicals into the air which can low voc paintsdecrease the indoor air quality (IAQ) of a home.

You may have heard about low VOC paints, or perhaps seen them in the store, and if you are like me, most likely notice the higher price tag.  If you have wondered what is it about low VOC products that make them more expensive and what is the benefit of using them you have come to the right place.

First let's discuss what VOCs are.  VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds that are found in many building materials and products.  Click here to see a list of common indoor pollutants (http://206.191.57.201/tllflash/NAR_Green/docs/Common%20Pollutants.pdf).

The thing with VOCs that it is not just the initial fumes that can affect the indoor air quality of your home, as gases can continue to be released over time because volatile chemicals are ones that "off gas" at room temperature.

One way that you can improve your overall air quality in your home is to make a conscious effort purchase and use materials that contain low VOCs or formaldehyde free products such as paint, flooring, carpet, sealants, stains, and adhesives.

Thanks for the great post. I love low VOC paints, as they don't make a house smell bad for the first few weeks. If only they could duplicate the technology for new carpet!!

Indoor air quality is an important thing to be aware of, and low VOC paint helps preserve that while redoing a home.  Great post.

Ya know- the funny thing is No- VOC doesnt have to be more expensive. If you go to Home Depot and pick up a gallon of Behr Paint- youre looking at about $25 p/gallon. Sherwin Williams Harmony paint- there No Voc paint is only about $26.50 p/gallon. And it's great paint!
