Google News - Business Page has Changed!

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster 0225078705

It is no surprise to anyone that Google has been hard hit is stock value in this market.  They are facing many new changes to make up some incredible loss of wealth.  There are layoffs and downsizing and announcement of new Algorithms that are smarter than humans.  I don't think so, and now I have a major disappointment with Google!  One of my favorite reasons for visiting Google several times during the day is to look at the business news.  I follow stocks, and trends of the DJIA and the markets in general.  I have worked on Wall Street, I worked for Treasury Dept. in DC, and I still have some investments and monies in the market.  So I really like to know what is going on!

Every day, I always check out the moving stock index charts on the upper right hand side of the Google's Business News page.  Guess what?  They are no longer there!  Google has announce this week that it was changing the page and the page would be updated in the following fashion with this disclaimer on the bottom of the page:

"The selection and placement of stories on this page were determined automatically by a computer program. The time or date displayed reflects when an article was added to or updated in Google News."

What I dislike most is the ability to view the market conditions at a moment in time!  Now I have to go to MSN, or Yahoo to find the information I can no longer find on Google!

Hi Jim. Wow! It's hard to believe that Google is that hard pressed financially. Maybe it is just a matter of automating everything and not caring too much about the product?

Probably not a money maker for Google, so when it's time to trim, it's first to go. I like Yahoo's better, so I won't miss it.

Charles Stallions Real Estate 800-309-3414 Pensacola, Fl.   Their stock has dropped big time.  There stock is held by many major Mutual funds.  It plunged!  The stories that preceded this one talked about downsizing, and keeping valued staff with all the cutbacks.  This is not going to cut it for me.

Bob Foster (Century 21 Lanthorn R. E. Ltd. Belleville, Ontario)  You nailed it.  There is a lot that is going to change.  Web placement may also change greatly because they want you to pay for it.  There were a log of other great search engines that bit the dust and they changed dramatically before failing.  Could this be the beginning of something similar?  Stay tuned!

Dear Jim,

I havent even noticed because I've been so busy trying to put a new web project up, on top of trying to super-serve my clients. Thanks for mentioning it.

Several years ago, Google was my home page when I launch IE, but now it's my AR home. That just shows you how much my priorities have changed. Be it good or bad!

I'm with most people that I like the google factor.  I tend to find more of what it is that I'm seeking out there on google...it's just simple to use.

But I also understand "trimming" what they might see as fat...

Sheila Moran, SanAntonioSheila.com RE/MAX Access, Broker, At your service! (RE/MAX Access (Garden Ridge, San Antonio, New Braunfels))  I use Google almost exclusivley, and now I am not.  There were many other great search engines, that just do not exist anymore.  They were all great in their hayday!  There was GO, InfoSeek, Compuserve, Prodigy, AOL, HotBot, Magellan, Excite, Northern Lights, Overture, Looksmart, Altavista and many more.  Some exist today but not as a dominent player.  Could this ever happen to Google if they change too much, and consumers do not like those changes?

I briefly read something about Twitter cutting into Google traffic because Twitter is a better source for up-to-date news. I have various news twitters set up on my TweetDeck, and it's really handy to be able to have it "beep" me when a new feed comes in. I don't have to go to a web site to get the news, it comes to me as it becomes available.
