On June 1, 2009 I am going to re-invent myself. Ten days from now I'm going  to do something that will change my life and career forever... I'm going to officially start blogging. It's my 'mid-year resolution.'

On the surface, that probably doesn't seem like a big deal. Blogging is just typing a few simple words a couple of times a week, right? Unfortunately, when people tell me "you should really start blogging" it evokes the same response as the phrases "you need a root canal," "you're being audited by the IRS" or "Congratulations, you're having sextuplets!" I PANIC! My heart starts to race, my breathing becomes erratic and my palms could be mistaken for Niagara Falls South.

That overly dramatic response makes absolutely no sense to me. When I was majoring in journalism at the University of Kansas... writing was easy. During my newspaper internships at the Kansas City Star... it was a breeze. However, as a real estate agent... writing literally scares me to death. Well, I guess not literally. Maybe it's because there have been a few years since college and I'm afraid my writing is not up to par. Maybe I'm afraid that if I make a mistake, I will appear uninformed and damage my credibility as a Realtor. Whatever the reason, the excuses stop now.

At least 25 times in the past few years I have started to blog and then stopped shortly thereafter. This time I am publicly committing to it and and I know that with the support of my friends and fellow agents I will become a blogging machine. Sounds like a nicotine gum commercial, huh? I have a lot to say about real estate, technology, social networking, photography and so much more.

Not a day goes by that I don't preach the value of using social media to expand ones audience and maximize marketing dollars. Until now, I was a total hypocrite. Blogging is an indispensable tool for many successful real estate agents and if you're not writing one, you need to be reading or watching one. Yes, I said 'watching.' While I'm just dipping my toes into the shallow waters of 'regular' blogging, the tidal wave called video blogging or "vlogging" is barreling toward me. I think I'm gonna need a bigger surfboard... ;)

Finally, for your reading and viewing pleasure, here are my personal top 5 favorite real estate blogs/ vlogs and a very special bonus. In no particular order:

And, drumroll please... (you do NOT want to miss this guy, especially if you love the vino)
Last and most definitely least, starting on June 1, visit Mr. Gotham's World to monitor my progress and see what I have to say as I begin this blogging journey. Follow me on Twitter: @GothamRealtyGrp

Bravo on your efforts but more importantly I will now adopt your "mid year resolution" and do something really special on June 1st too.  Not sure what but I have a few days to work it out.  Thanks for a great post.

Well Jonathan, you are in for some good times, especially if you spend any amount of time on ActiveRain.  I started last August after I moved and had some time on my hands since I had no business!  I began for the google juice, and found that and SO MUCH MORE!  ActiveRain is like a giant Mastermind Group of Mega Agents willing to share EVERYTHING THEY HAVE with you.  It is mind blowing.  The depth of knowledge that is here is phenomenal.  Cruise the Groups to find some that interest you.  Leave comments on other's posts and soon you will find many of them reciprocate by leaving comments on yours, and so it goes.  Good luck, and have fun!

Ladies, thanks for the support and advice. I am so excited to finally get going. It's good to know that there are other agents out there you can turn to for help.

'Turns out you're already a blogger!  Very nice post, Jonathan.  I can certainly identify with everything you said.

My sons nagged me to blog, and I had the same reaction as you.  It turned out they created a blogging monster.  I had to laugh yesterday when they asked me to set up and write a blog promoting their new business.  LOL.

'Looking forward to seeing more of you around here!

Johnathan,

Wow a feature and you haven't even begun, yeah right! Well done. As for mid-year resolutions, I like your style, who not? Maybe I can re-committ mid-year for the ones I didn't follow through since Jan. 1, right?

Good job, looking forward to seeing you more in the Rain?

You'll kick butt as a former journalism star in college. Don't let it distract you from real estate.

Are you a Realtor or a Blogger?

It is fun.  Just commit to your schedule and do it.  Imperfect but started is better than perfectly undone...  Ok, maybe 'good, but started'.

Hey Jonathan,

No worries!  If an old dog like me can become a blogger, it will be easy for you.  As a matter of fact, after reading this post, I'd say you're a natural.  Why wait ten days?  Jump into the Rain now!  :)

Jonathon -

Great resolution, we'll look for you and your brilliant writing!

You'll do fine - this coming from an AR Addict from Chicago, who posts 10 times each week, with, hopefully, compelling content - most of the time.

We'll see you!

My goodness.  You have a lead on so many new bloggers.  You have writing experience.  That is, IMO, the single biggest hurdle for most new bloggers and ActiveRain members.

As so many have learned, joining ActiveRain doesn't make a member a writer.

Writing makes members bloggers.

Writing is an acquired skill.  Far too few have that skill, or at least do not know that they have that skill.

Writing is fun.  More should try it.  They just might like it.

Jonathan... I was in your shoes about a year and half ago.  Blogging, what is that?  When did I need to do it?  I'd rather go to the dentist (which were your words too).  Once I got started, it wasn't that bad.. now I'm hooked.  Welcome to the world of blogging.

It's a great attitude that you have. I hope that you don't have a wife, because if you do, she'll accuse you of being married to the computer once you start blogging. Trust me, I know - I've been doing this now for four months and that's my wife's biggest complaint. It becomes addictive, in a good way- as so many have already pointed out, you'll learn so much here in the Rain by being an active participant. Looking forward to reading your subsequent posts.

I was on a webinar this week featuring Ian and he is the best. I am just starting to add video to my web site blog. It really does help you connect with potential clients becasue it shows your personality. If you look at Ian's videos they are anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Short but very sweet.

MWAH! A big kiss on the cheek for the ladies (the gentlemen only get a firm handshake) of Active Rain. I'd like to thank my AR counterparts for their support and advice. Like the somewhat inebriated friend at a karaoke bar, I've decided to keep this party going by continuing the countdown with another post today... I think.

At the moment, however, I need a little help with Active Rain protocol. Some of the comments I have received are questions and I'm not sure the best way to respond.

Assuming it's not polite to post a bunch of responses in the comments section of my own blog, how else should I reply? Perhaps with some sort of new-fangled direct messaging tool on Active Rain that has been hiding from me? Is there a better way? I just don't want to be rude, especially on the first (well, actually second) day of school. ;)

Anyway, I will try to address a few of them now:

#7.   My major is "Realtorism" with a minor in blogging. LOL

#17. Sure, why not? I can't promise to always be witty and humorous, but I can promise that I will be real. And, I will try to address a variety of issues not always directly related to real estate.

#23. I AM a procrastinator, but even more of a perfectionist. My wife (another former journalist, except has a University of Missouri journalism degree) will be watching my blog like a hawk. So, I decided I needed a bit of  "practice" to get my writing chops back in shape. Plus, Mid Year's Day is June 1.

If you asked a question to which I didn't respond and you're on Twitter, I am @GothamRealtyGrp. Thanks.

Respond any way you wish.  One thing is for sure, responding is the only way to begin a conversation.  I try my best to respond to all comment, sometimes in lont lists.  Comments are the zest of ActiveRain.

You can click their name and go to their profile and e-mail.  Or, you can respond right in your post the way you did to #23.

Folks who comment can get an alert of comments to a post.  I don't do that because there are often too many.  I do track my own comments to see if the writer want to say more.
