Remembering our heroes

Whatever your plans are for Memorial Day....a trip to the beach, cookout in the backyard, catching up on chores around the house or working, I hope you will take a moment at 3 PM to pause and remember those who have died in service to our country.

I also hope that you will take the time to explain to your children what the Memorial Day holiday is all about.  I believe it is very important that our children learn from our example and words that we respect and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.  We must teach them that our freedom is a precious gift that has been given to us by these fallen heroes and that by remembering and honoring them on Memorial Day, we express our appreciation and admiration.

Let us never forget!

Beautiful pic & reminder, Cynthia.  Too often we forget (I'm a big perpetrator) what this Memorial Day is all about.

"I also hope that you will take the time to explain to your children what the Memorial Day holiday is all about."

This is the most importaant thing we can do for those who have lived and died for our country. I grew up in a very patriotic home and my father made this holiday all about the celebration of these men and women. There are some fantastic stories to be told and sharing those with our kids, perhaps with an old movie or a trip to an military museum, is a great way to make the most of this day.

What a wonderful reminder - and a beautiful graphic.  And while I agree with you 100000000% on teaching and observing the REAL meaning of the holiday, I do believe that sentiment could be applied to ALL holidays.

I plan on attending a program held here at a local vets cemetery on Saturday.  I just hope I don't turn into a blubbering fool.

Yes, please teach your children and don't assume they are learning this stuff in their schools like us "old" people were when we went through. We must continually remind future generations that our freedom wasn't free.

Cynthia  Those of us who live with the military as neighbors and friends are especially mindful of the sacrifices those who gave their lives have made for us.  Teaching children the value and meaning of that sacrifice of that sacrifice is important for our future as well as theirs.  Sometime this weekend my former Marine husband will pay a visit to the National Cemetery at Quantico - he has two comrades there - he never fails to walk the grounds,  Karen

Cynthia, Beautiful picture and thoughts....I do wonder if parents explain what it really is to their children and we all remember to honor those that have served or are serving now.

Cynthia a beautiful picture and reminder to everyone to remember among the celebrations that lives were given for our freedom.  I went to Arlington yesterday and it never fails to be an emotional experience not because I have a loved on there but because you see so many loved ones who have been lost.

What a beautiful reminder post.  We were actually watching the NASCAR race and they had all of the drivers pull in at 3 for a moment of silence. It was very moving.  Even Race City USA has their priorities in order!

Jason,
I hope that is changing and we are am more aware of the signaficance of Memorial Day.  Thanks.

Jennifer,
Yes, yes! I believe it is sooo important for children to understand history.

Carol,
It does apply to all holidays.  Did you go and did you blubber?  Blubbering is good, you know.

Wendy,
Thanks, so am I and I want our military people to know that.

Beautiful photo in your post.  I read a comment above about Nascar stopping at 3 pm to remember.  A lot of elites look down on Nascar and their fans but this just shows that they know what is truly important.  Cytnthia, I think it can't be stressed enough to make sure children learn and understand the importance of this day.  So much wonderful and rich history is getting lost through the generations now.
