Wouldn't it be wonderful if all children could read?

Reading

Better Basics, Inc. is a non-profit United Way agency that provides a variety of programs to schools to help students who may be be struggling with their reading skills.

It all began in 1994, with one elementary school in Birmingham.  Better Basics has grown a bit since that time, having been invited to more than 60 schools in and around Birmingham.

Their mission is "to advance literacy by providing intervention and enrichment in high-need schools".  Thousands of students have benefited by the many books, enrichment programs, and tutoring that the agency provides.

Along with teachers and staff, many volunteers are needed to provide young readers with the help they need to improve their reading and learning skills.

To learn more, or if you would like to find out how to become a volunteer or a financial supporter, please visit Better Basics website.

Hello Ann. What a great group for the advocacy of being literate. We all need to better communicate in the world and any efforts toward this end are very worthwhile. Happy Memorial Day weekend Ann!!

Ann - There is nothing more important today for our children than improving their reading skills.   My 7 yr. old granddaughter loves to read and I so enjoy listening to her when she wants to read a story to me.  This is a wonderful program that is so beneficial to all the children in Birmingham.

I love this.  I am a firm believer that most won't know how much they would love to read until they are introduced to reading.

Ann - It sounds like a GREAT program.  I have always felt that if you could teach a kid to read, then learning other subjects became so much easier because they had access through books.

Great Program, .....children sometimes need someone special to help them learn to read! Everyone learns at different speeds and in a classroom its very difficlut to get alot of one on one instruction. This an excellent program.

This sounds wonderful.  I am a reading fanatic and feel it is so important to be able to read.  What a gift.  I know many kids who are falling behind may feel embarrassed and not say anything.  I'm glad they have help!

Hi Ann, This sounds like such a great program.  Although reading skills come easy for some children, others need that extra help that tutoring provides.
