Tips for writing a great blog

By

This month's edition of "Texas Realtor", the magazine published by the Texas Association of Realtors, had a really great social networking section.  I always look forward to getting mine every month because it is really easy to read, always has relevant and helpful articles, and also includes updates relevant to our profession!  The social networking section included some great articles like "Six Harmful Social Networking Habits", "Six Reasons to Start Blogging", "Four Mistakes that Could Land You in Court", and my favorite "Seven Ways to Write a Great Blog".  I am still pretty new to blogging and any advice I can get is very welcome, so I thought I would pass on these great tips.

1.  Be yourself - Have a great sense of humor? Show it! Are you really good at market analysis? Share your knowledge! If you are an expert in technology...help a sister out!

2.  Know Your Audience - decide who you want to target and find out what they want to know!

3.  Generate copy consistency - make sure you update regularly and always keep your content fresh and current!  Do you know a great inspector, stager, mortgage broker? Ask him/her for tips to include (make sure you include a link to his/her contact info).

4.  Get them and keep them - make sure you include a variety of content and modes of delivery (pictures, video, charts, links).  Keep the blog entertaining and engaging!

5.  Participate in the blogosphere - stay involved in other real estate professionals blogs, make sure you comment and reply to comments left on your blog (of course...if you are reading this, you are on Active Rain and already do this one)!!

6.  Tell them who you are - make sure your contact info is easily accessible (again...Active Rain makes this one a no brainer for us)

7.  Don't over-promote - Don't be "all business", include personal stories and community happenings!

There are so many amazing bloggers on Active Rain and I know for me personally...I learn so much from reading others' blogs!  Many of you probably already follow these tips (and many others) but I really thought these were some great ideas, especially for new bloggers.  Hope you all have a great weekend!

Jeanna,

I am fairly new to AR and I just love reading what other realtors are thinking and doing across the nation.  I feel more in touch with the industry.  Those were good tips.  Thanks for the post.

Jeanna:  I could not agree with you more.  All of your points are very valid.  In order for you to write to your audience, you have to have chosen who your audience is.  An obvious point that many people miss.  I also think that Being Yourself is very important... but then again, it depends who your target audience is.  Some want to know who you are much more than others.

And obviously, if you want other people to read your blog posts... it really helps for you to get out there and read other people's blog posts... and comment on them, too.

One final requirement... if you write a post, and people comment on it... it is extremely important that you answer their comments... right there in the comment section of the post.  If they comment, and then feel ignored when they come back to see your response to their comment... they may never come back again.  Thanks for sharing...

Hi Sandra, Welcome to AR! Since you are new to bloging I thought I'd let you know that whenever we write about anothers authors article, whether its posted online or in print, the correct way is to give an intro to, or feedback or commentary to the article and then link out to the article. Otherwise its a violation of Copyright rules. Posting an image from publications is also a no-no. When I first started I didn't have a clue, so don't feel bad! Welcome! Ginger

Jeanna, I think the article hit it dead on for all the points. Eventually your voice will emerge as who your targeted audience readers are as well.
