Though failure to clean dryer vents is the number one cause of clothes dryer fires, Rhonda Nole explains other threats
Greenbrae, CA - Rhonda Nole is the owner of Dryer Vent Wizard, a dryer vent cleaning and dryer exhaust specialist in the Greater North Bay, California area. Rhonda recently inspected a dryer vent system and she was happy to see that it was properly installed and met all UL safety standards. A complete cleaning was all that was needed for the system to work efficiently; however, the area was not free from fire hazards.
In a recent interview, Rhonda said, "I was impressed with what I found in a recent client's home. The system met all safety standards; the vent was made of semi-rigid metal rather than vinyl or plastic and it was installed properly. I usually find at least one or two problems with every dryer vent system that I inspect. This one just needed cleaning, which is normal. All dryer vent systems should be professionally cleaned at least once a year."
There was one fire hazard that many consumers do not give a thought to. Rhonda explained, "I noticed paint cans and paint remover stored near the dryer and the room was cluttered with grocery bags, cleaning supplies, rags and items that should be kept well away from the clothes dryer. Dryers produce heat; these items should be stored in the garage or somewhere away from heat producing appliances."
Rhonda also told us about rags that have been soaked with flammable material; even if they have been washed, some residue can remain. These rags should be line dried to ensure safety.
As the interview concluded, Rhonda said, "I'm especially concerned with my customers who live in attached apartments or condos. It only takes one negligent homeowner to endanger many people if they should have a dryer fire. A very important part of my service is to explain potential problems to my customers to be sure they understand their dryer exhaust system and the importance of proper maintenance."
