Do you use the Popcorn button on your microwave?  Are you one that says, "Yes, I use it, but it doesn't really pop the popcorn very well"?  Is your bag usually not full?  Do you have lots of kernels left over?

If so, you're not using it properly!  I'm going to assume you don't know the little trick.  Every time I tell someone, they're so appreciative...  Most times, when you hit the popcorn button, you have to hit the 30 second extender, and sometimes you have to hit it twice as the corn is still popping. Who wants to leave all those kernels in the bag?

Granted, I only know the trick to the GE microwaves, but I'm sure all the other brands have something similar if you want to google it, but the most common is GE and that's what I've had in my last 3 houses.

When you hit the Popcorn button, immediately push the 9 button twice.  You should see two + signs if you did this properly. This automatically extends the time so you don't have to worry about waiting to see if you need to extend it or not.

Most of the time, when I hit the 9 twice (as you can just hit it once if you want), I stop the microwave with about 10-15 seconds left on it. That means, I definitely needed the first extension and needed only part of the second, but you get so much more popcorn in those 15 extra seconds you give it to pop.

Next time you're popping corn in the microwave, hit the 9 and see if you can make some better popcorn!

Another reason why I love AR, you never stop learning new things. With a 3 yr old we do our fair share of microwave popcorn. Thanks for the tip.

My microwave is too old to have a popcorn button :(  Sadly it still works, so I keep using it.  And my current brand of pop corn takes 2:47 to pop.  I usually set it for 4 minutes on the first bag and watch the timer and then write the appropriate amount of time on the box for anyone else in the house who might be popping it.  And I buy a box of 24 bags so it lasts for a while.

Hi Donna... I love microwave popcorn and am always annoyed with the number of unpopped kernals.  I also have a GE microwave, so I will definitely be trying this out!  Thanks for sharing!

Our microwave detects the weight of the bag- I am not sure how this happens but the end result is great!  This is a handy tip

Donna,

Great tip I will give this a try.  I usually undercook to avoid the smell of burnt popcorn.

Donna, in my house..we stop the popcorn early, we all love the seeds. Actually we fight over them. My oldest daughter sometimes pops it JUST to have the seeds .LOL

Pat, Try it and see.

Rita, That's what I used to do until I figured out the popcorn button.

Teresa, Let me know how it works for you.

Steve, Yeah!

Florida Pines, That's a fancy microwave to detect the weight!

Richard, Yes, that burnt smell isn't good, but most of the times, the popcorn isn't actually burnt, so let it go longer.

Missy, That's bad for your teeth!  I like eating the kernels too! ;)

Leesa, Keep in mind that it doesn't matter what platform you're blogging on but that blogging is about you and your life, so I can blog whatever I want as it's MINE...
