My, oh my. Life can be just a little too challenging at times. The last 10 days has been more than a little exciting and it sure reminds me how much this business, and life, can be like a roller coaster ride.
I switched companies, from Iowa's largest to a mid-sized one, but one which is growing in leaps and bounds (a RE/MAX franchise -- See HomeConnectUSA.com to get a feel of what a GR8! company RE/MAX Real Estate Concepts is) and seems to be attracting some very good agents.
I brought a couple of single-family listings with me; one sold in the next 48 hours, and another within the first week. Des Moines Real Estate is still hot! What a great feeling yet that means I'm kind of "out of business". I'd much rather have 10 listings than 2 (now 0), but I take what I can get.
I had some listing prospects with a client who had already used by services on a couple of really tough rental houses -- I helped them to convert these rentals into a retail ready product and, thank God, they both sold! I must have had 150 hours into one of them and due to the lower commission rate at the big company, I was still trying to work my way up to minimum wage.
I had hoped to be able to list their personal residence, which they had promised they would, yet within the last hour, they let me know that they had just sold the house themselves. -- Bummer! I had given them quite a bit of advice about prepping the property for sale (as I had on the other rentals) and darned if that advice didn't turn out to be just a little too good!
They sold it BO without even putting a sign in the ground! Good for them, but sad for me. I knew that solid surface, granite countertop and a fresh coat of paint on those cabinets would be just the ticket to entice a buyer to make an offer. Too bad it had to be such a good offer!
So, back to the roller coaster ride of RE sales. I know -- if I was looking for a slow and steady type of business, Real Estate sales is not it. It's either feast or famine. I'm continuing to learn to take the good with the bad. Not only is the income like a roller coaster, but with emotional aspects of the business can be a real challenge, too.
I thank God for every day, but some days are definitely better than others.
