Western and Janson with Conductor WRMThis holiday weekend my wife and I wanted to take it easy. So what do you do for nearby fun Living in Brentwood? Our older two boys were off having fun so Saturday we packed up the three little boys and headed to the Western Railway Museum in Suisun, CA.

The Western Railroad Museum is primarily a collection electric trains, both intra city and intra city. I knew there were a number of cities with electric street cars, but what I did not know is you could travel over most of the state on electric trains. The Museum is not as hands on as I would like but there are a number of trains to see. The first shed is a self guided tour, where sadly to say I say train cars of the type I used to ride on when I went to San Francisco State. I do not feel old enough that something I rode on should be in a museum. There is a second shed with guided tours.

The highlight of the trip is the train rides. Two rides are available every day. The shorter ride is about 20 minutes and is on an intra-city type train. The one we rode was from the old Key Route system that ran in the East Bay up until the late 1950’s. There is a 45 minute ride on a inter-city train. The train we rode on plied between the North Bay and Sebastopol.

I am always amazed at the old style craftsmanship and attention to detail on these trains. The ones we rode on had extensive wood work and leather seats. This type of work is a lost art. As a family we go to a number of railroad museums and train rides.

The museums are run by volunteers, most of them are older gentlemen who are now retired and can play on big train sets. (As my grandma said, “Men are just little boys with more expensive toys.”) I am grateful what they do. It is an important part of our history and culture.                          Weston & Janson on a Train!

I feel your pain. So much of my youth is now in museums, from trains to my first computer (Osborne) to Rubik's Cube....
