A Day to Remember....Memorial Day. What does it mean to you?
As most of you know I have a step-son in Iraq. I have written many posts about him and how scary it has been at times wondering how he is doing. It has been deeply appreciated, the sincere and gracious comments that my AR friends and family have posted. You will never know the great warmth and peace that I feel when reading them again and again.
I found this poem written by Kelly Strong. It is entitled "Freedom is Not Free." It is a beautiful poem and I wanted to share it with you on this very special day of recognition.
I know Memorial Day is a day of barbecues, family gatherings and an extra day off of work for some, but, let us not forget the true reasons that this day... is a day to remember
Freedom is Not Free
We walked among the crosses
Where our fallen soldiers lay.
And listened to the bugle
As TAPS began to play.
The Chaplin led a prayer
We stood with heads bowed low.
And I thought of fallen comrades
I had known so long ago.
They came from every city
Across this fertile land.
That we might live in freedom.
They lie here 'neath the sand.
I felt a little guilty
My sacrifice was small.
I only lost a little time
But these men lost their all.
Now the services are over
For this Memorial Day.
To the names upon these crosses
I just want to say,
Thanks for what you've given
No one could ask for more.
May you rest with God in heaven
From now through evermore.
Kelly Strong
