brandon weintraub in land parkThere must be some law of the universe that says if you're going to have a medical emergency, it's almost duty bound to happen on a Sunday. When I poked myself in the eye with a yucca plant, it was on a Sunday. When my husband dropped a pan of boiling artichoke water, which splashed upward and scalded his face, it was on a Sunday. As you know, doctor's offices are closed on Sundays.

Ditto for veterinary doctors. My cat, Brandon, had an emergency late yesterday afternoon. He fell face first into his litter box. It was clear he was in pain. I'll spare you the gory details, but when you're owned by a cat who is sick, you'll be amazed at the grossest things you will do and the lengths you will go to clean up after the cat. Blood, diarrhea, vomit, nothing phases you.

Ordinarily, Brandon's medical health is managed by the Midtown Animal Clinic in Davis. He has arthritis, seasonal asthma and mild renal dysfunction. Since Midtown Animal Clinic was closed, my husband and I put our dinner plans on hold and drove to the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching College in Davis, which has a 24-hour small animal emergency clinic.

On the way over the Yolo Bypass to Davis, a starling flew into our windshield. Death. Brandon was amazingly quiet for being transported to the vet. Usually he screams bloody murder all the way, so loud that I have to crank up the CD player to tune out his wails. My husband and I always listen to music in the car, but not last night.

Brandon is almost 18. That's old for a cat. I tried to think about escrows, upcoming listings, even how much some short sale banks frustrate me just to get my mind off Brandon's situation and the sorry scenarios my mind wanted to naturally gravitate toward.

The School of Veterinary Medicine at Davis is a national leader in animal research, teaching and animal health services. Its medical teaching college is part of that UC Davis system. The staff is comprised of board-certified veterinary specialists and veterinary residents in advanced programs. The fee for an emergency visit to the small animal clinic is $100, not including X-rays, special procedures or blood work, but it's not that much more than you'd pay at your own vet.

Diana, a veterinary resident, completed our intake interview. Dr. Joan Teitler examined Brandon and gave him two enemas. The radiographs showed a distended and impacted bowel. We were at the clinic for 4 hours.

Brandon is still a bit lethargic this morning, but he appears to be recovering, thank goodness. I am quite certain that Dr. Teitler saved his life, and I'm so grateful. I am thankful to be living near one of the top veterinary medical schools in the nation. If you have a pet emergency in Sacramento, I can recommend no better place to go than the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching College. The VMTH Small Animal Clinic phone number is 530.752.1393.

Elizabeth- Right now I don't really even have a vet that I love.  I like her, but the one I love has recently moved from his home into a nursing home.  I LOVED Dr. Meeks.  He once operated on one of my cats for over 5 hours and charged me about $200. plus meds.  He loved animals and he loved people who rescued animals and every single pet I have ever owned has been a rescue animal.

I am so glad that Brandon is on the mend and that you are fortunate enough to have a place to carry him on a Sunday.  It's true... those things always happen when the Dr. or vet is closed.  He's a beautiful cat by the way.

Hi Miriam: Brandon may be beautiful but he hates everybody except my husband and me. He treats us with love and is unbearingly clingy at times. If another person tries to pet him, though, he'll knock their glasses off their face and across the room. Go figure.

Hi Tom: You will love the vets in Davis at the Midtown Animal Clinic. I filed a complaint with the Veterinary Board against a cat clinic in Land Park and later was referred by a friend in San Francisco to the vets in Davis. They are simply phenomenal.

Hi Wanda: This was my first experience at the UC Davis Medical Teaching Hospital. If I ever go there again, though -- knock on wood -- I'm dropping the cat off and going home. I hate sitting in hospital waiting rooms for hours.

Hi Tammy: You know, while we were there, a couple brought in their dog who had trouble standing and walking. I couldn't figure out why they didn't let the dog lie down. Finally, they did. About 20 minutes later, the vet was ready to see their dog, and they forced the dog to stand up and walk, when it was obviously in pain. Sure, it was a big dog, but I would have carried him, I guess. Later I saw the vet wheel the dog down the hall on a flat shopping cart. My husband overheard the couple talking. They said they have paid $40,000 so far to treat cancer in their dogs. We all love our pets in our own way.

If my daughter reads this, she'll feel pain right along with you and your cat.  She always has a vet plan.

Elizabeth,

That's what I am fighting with: a temptation to get a cat, and I love cats, and the fact that we leave in the morning and come at 8 or 9 in the evening, so the cat will be all alone and it is not a good for cats, and pets in general.

Now you add the scare of pets getting old faster....

What we won't do for our pets. Our Dog is 13 and seems like we are seeing more vet issues recently.

Hi Barbara: Well, he is doing better today. The vet called to say his blood work shows high white blood cells, so she put him on an additional antibiotic. He's been purring again but often cats purr while in pain.

Hi Teri: I guess I am Brandon's mom. Nobody else will claim the old grouch.

Hi Jon: Some cats love to be alone. In fact, their worlds might be perfect if they had all the food they wanted, a clean cat box plus a comfy place to sleep with no people whatsoever in sight. Other types of cats prefer company, but to solve that problem, see, you just get TWO cats!!

Hi Terry: You don't strike me as the kind of guy who would have a little dog. I picture you more with a German Shepard or maybe a Great Dane.

Good to hear Brandon is doing well! I know the feeling about a sick pet on a weekend and the vet is closed. My dog Chanel has put me through this a few times and I did anything I could to keep her alive till Monday morning.

Elizabeth, our 'free' kitty we found at the dock also had an emergency on a weekend night and $600 later we took him home. But it was worth every penny and after that, Fitz was completely bonded to me! I'm the one who took him to the vet. Glad Brandon's on the mend and that you have such an incredible resource so near.
