There were two things today that stuck with regards to respect.  Both were connected to this holiday, Memorial Day.  On this day we celebrate the fine men and women of our military, both past and present... especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives for our freedom

This morning, before the laying of the wreath at The Tomb of the Unknowns, during the "Colors Ceremony", President Obama had a press conference.  He wanted to recite a few meaningless platitudes regarding the North Korean nuclear test yesterday.  The result was that during one of our most solen national ceremonies, all of the new stations had to cut away from Arlington National Cemetery in order to cover the President's remarks.  And, frankly, he didn't say anything that couldn't have waited until after he went to lay the wreath.  He basically said the same things that he has been saying each time the North Koreans break international laws and treaties... that the UN will do something about it this time and that it is unacceptable.

In short, I found it disgustingly disrespectful to take away from Arlington National Cemetery and the reason for Memorial Day in order to spout a few meaningless phrases.

On the opposite end of the spectrum was NASCAR.  The Coca-Cola 600, which was rained out yesterday, was run today.  The President had decreed that at 3:00 there should be a moment of silence in respect of our military, past and present, and those that had fallen in service to our country. In the middle of the race, at 2:59, NASCAR through a red flag and halted the race cars on the front straight.  At 3:00, all of the engines fell silent.  The crews stood at the end of their pit boxes with their hats removed.  The fans all stood and for the next minute there was total silence.  200,000 fans at the race, 43 cars and hundreds of race personnel all stood silent.  Totally silent.

NASCAR fans are looked down upon by many 'elites'.  They are 'working class' people that like loud engines and beer.  They are also devited to their families and respectful of those in the armed services.  Nobody whines about a prayer before the race.  They don't mind seeing a wreck, but they cheer when the driver climbs out of the car and waves that he is ok.  They might punch a fellow fan because they don't like his favorite driver, but they will also be the ones that will stop and help a stranger on the highway. Even if the prayer isn't delivered by a minister of their chosen faith, they still bow their heads and take off their hats.

The bottom line is that NASCAR and its fans understand that without the selfless sacrifice of those that serve our country in the military, there may be no race.  There may be no church.  There may be no college football... or college.  They understand that those people deserve our respect and thanks EVERY day, and that there are more important things than a press conference OR a race

Maybe some of the 'elites' in DC would be well served to hop in a motorhome and spend some time visiting with NASCAR fans around the country.

Hi Lane!  What a weekend we've had here!  Rain, rain and MORE rain!  This is the first time in 50 years that the race here in Charlotte has had to be delayed, muchless CALLED due to weather.  I understands the stands were only 1/2 full today as most had to head back home.  I guess if this happens only once in 50 years, that's not too bad!

Hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Hi Lane...I think it is wonderful that so many are observing the true meaning of Memorial Day by paying respect to those that have died while serving our country.

In addition to respecting them, it would also be nice if more people made contributions to the various organizations that help families of those that died and also those that take care of the survivors that have come home with physical and emotional wounds.

Volunttering or making a monetary donation is one way of really showing respect.

Debe - Looked pretty full at the beginning of the race... but was pretty empty when they finally called it.  And they have actually had a couple of rain-shortened races... but this was the shortest.

Kate - Like the Hannity Freedom Tour?  And NASCAR Charities is doing a bunch of stuff.

Terry - It is something we need to remember every day.

Sorry, I should have said delayed for an entire day--yes, we've had delays but, not to the next day!  Pretty amazing, huh?!

Lane - I am not a fan of NASCAR, but that's because I think a race should be more than turning left. But then I prefer Grand Prix style. However, I am in agreement, NASCAR fans and drivers tend to be just plain folks, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Eric - I did, thank you.

Debe - I thought there were a couple... but since there are a pantload of races there...

Mike - I used to think that... but there is an amazing amount of strategy that goes into NASCAR races.  And the guys are pretty cool for the most part.

Sorry but there's no room to park a motorhome in Georgetown.

As for the rest of the post, it was very meaningful and a nice job by NASCAR.  I happened to be at a small local spot grabbing a quick bite when I saw that and I stopped what I was doing to reflect upon the meaning of Memorial Day.

Lane - Great post. For years the Nascar has been scoffed at by politicians from the north, because they don't understand the working class people who attend these races. For the most part, Democrats don't understand honest people anywhere. In racing, going on strike will get you nothing. If you want more money, win more races. Wouldn't it be great if our current administration thought that people should earn what they get, instead of just being entitled.

As far as understanding the sacrifice that our military has endured, I don't think Obama really cares. It's just his job to look like he does.

Lane- You are right that NASCAR fans are a true representation of most Americans.  I missed the Obama press conference and am really glad that I did because Memorial Day is not a time for any politician or official to do anything but remember our fallen heros.  Would probably have made me upset for the whole day.  But as it was, I was truly impressed with NASCAR stopping the race to observe a moment of silence.

Tchaka - They have runways at most of the tracks, so even Nancy Pelosi can take the plane she requires to be on call for her at all times to go to a race.. but she might have to talk to "those people."

Larry - The people that attend races are exactly the people that the Democrats want to target... but they are also quite conservative.  So, they are dissed...

Kim - The President's news conference wasn't "political" as much as just thoughtless.  He was responding to North Korea's nuclear test...  Obviously they listened, since they fired a missile a couple days later...  Yep, telling them that the UN is going to deal with them really put fear in them.

He could have held off for a few hours.
