Solar Paint? The University of North Carolina Leads the Way!!!

Solar energy

Not too long ago I came across an article that I thought was just so interesting I had to share it with my friends here in the Rain.

Our local Raleigh area newspaper, the News and Observer, reported that one of our many fabulous universities had obtained a grant to create a paint that has the ability to power your home!

Yes, you read that right....Paint that can power your home!

Scientists at the University of North Carolina are working on this as I write! The first attempt at "solar paint" has already been created, but its cost, presently, is too expensive for most people.

solar paint?

Scientists and researchers from N.C. State, Duke, NC Central and the University of Florida will all collaborate to make solar paint a commonplace commodity.

Think of the possibilities if this solar paint becomes an affordable reality. Perhaps cars could be painted with a version of it reducing emissions and lowering the use of oil. Perhaps commercial buildings, in conjunction with solar panels, could become self sufficient.

With science and research leading the way, the possibilities are limitless.

Toula - This was the first I heard about it too. I would hope that with all the problems lead based paint caused in the late '70's the researchers and scientists working on this are keeping in mind all the potential harmful effects, and insuring that we don't have another problem on our hands.

Alan - See my remarks to Toula above....

Irene - This is of great concern to me too Irene. I'm hoping it can be done inexpensively. Anything that eliminates the need for oil, keeps emissions down and uses renewable energy while still respecting the Earth is a good thing

Linda -Oh come on, you're too smart not to realize that pun! Especially one that is that good! Well done!

Melissa - Although I've posted maybe one or two silly blogs in the past, this one is for real!!!

Sounds like a great plan, but I'm sure there is many years of research to be done.  And even when it's done ... I'm betting that the oil companies/tycoons will try to 'buy' the formula so that it doesn't cut into their profits.  I know ... I'm such a conspiracy theorist and a cynic.  LOL

Craig, wow, that would be too cool. I am thinking that if it really works we won't see it. OK, that was a bit cynical to say the least. I will be waiting for updates on this. Perhaps you can volunteer to be a guinea pig?

Pretty cool stuff.  I am sure this will lead to other applications with a similar idea. Maybe not just paint.  Remember velcro?  it was originally used to fasten clothing.  Now it has many other applications.

Good stuff Craig!

Donna - Yeah, brick houses wouldn't benefit from solar paint! Oh well!

Nevin - Velcro was actually created for the astronauts so that they could still do things while wearing those big spacesuit gloves.

Michael - How cool indeed!

Amy - Stick with your natural complexion Amy! It works on you!

Betina - Keep posted Betina! I'll let you know if I hear any news on when solar paint is coming to your town!

Hi Craig,  That is fascinating -- all things are possible!!  I'm glad the scientist are always thinking up new things to make our lives better...along Amy's line of thinking... I think they should develop "mood soap"  that would "paint" people according to their mood! LOL!!!
